The election commission for the Chattogram District Lawyers’ Association has resigned five days before the scheduled election. All members resigned collectively on Tuesday evening following tensions between the BNP-Jamaat-backed Lawyers’ Unity Council and the Awami League-backed Lawyers’ Coordination Council. An ad-hoc committee will be formed on February 11, marking the first such incident in the association’s 132-year history. The election commission was left with no choice but to resign as both contesting panels remained firm on their constitutional claims. The elections must be completed within two months, after which the responsibilities will be handed over to the newly elected committee.
