Police in Narayanganj detained Khairul Islam Sajib, son of Narayanganj-3 Member of Parliament Azharul Islam Mannan, on Sunday afternoon in connection with several extortion-related allegations. Sajib, who also serves as the senior joint convener of the district Jubo Dal, was taken from his residence in the Bashundhara area and brought to the Narayanganj Superintendent of Police’s office for questioning. He was later transferred to the Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Branch (DB) office for further interrogation.
According to police sources, Sajib faces five to six separate allegations, including extortion. Authorities stated that he was detained for preliminary verification of these complaints, and no formal case has yet been filed. Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Tarek Al Mehdi confirmed that the DB team brought Sajib in for questioning to verify the allegations, which remain under investigation.
Following reports of his detention, Sajib denied being arrested, calling the matter a “rumor and conspiracy.” His father, MP Azharul Islam Mannan, said that being called for questioning is part of a normal procedural process.
