At least 27 people have died and 83 remain missing after a passenger ferry capsized off the coast of Guyana. The incident occurred late Saturday night when the vessel MV Barima overturned while traveling from the capital Georgetown toward the Essequibo region. Prime Minister Mark Phillips confirmed the casualties on Monday, adding that 69 people have been rescued alive so far.

Authorities have expanded the search area from 400 to 1,070 square kilometers, with local fishermen joining the rescue efforts. The French military from neighboring French Guiana has sent 12 divers, two doctors, and a mechanic to assist. The ferry, built in 1939, reportedly sent a distress signal about eight hours after departure. Officials said the vessel carried 179 passengers, though earlier records listed 133.

Prime Minister Phillips stated that traces of marijuana were found in the bodies of two crew members, and a full investigation is underway to determine the cause of the accident.
