Students of Ta’mirul Millat Kamil Madrasa blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in Tongi, Gazipur, demanding construction of a footbridge. From 11am on Sunday, several thousand students occupied the road near Gazipura bus stand. Thousands of vehicles were stranded on both sides of the highway, causing suffering for passengers.
Students said ninth-grade student Yasin Ali was killed on Saturday night after being hit by a speeding covered van while crossing the highway near Gazipura bus stand. The covered van was seized after the incident, but its driver fled. Students began their protest and road blockade the following day in response to the death.
Using banners and slogans, the protesters demanded a footbridge in front of the madrasa. They said several thousand students cross the highway every day at risk to their lives and that a footbridge is urgently needed. Tongi West Police Station officer-in-charge Md Arifur Rahman said discussions were under way with the students and Roads and Highways officials had been informed.
