The High Court granted eight weeks’ anticipatory bail to Gazi Nazrul Islam, the expelled Jamaat-e-Islami member of parliament for Satkhira-4, in an attempted murder case filed at Pallabi police station in the capital. A bench of Justice K M Zahid Sarwar and Justice Sheikh Abu Taher issued the order on Monday after hearing the matter.

The court also directed the accused to surrender before a lower court. Senior lawyer S M Shahjahan represented Nazrul in support of the bail application. On July 21, his personal driver Obaidur Rahman filed the case alleging attempted murder. Four others—Aminur Rahman, Masum Billah, Mostasim Billah and Rakibul Hasan—were also named as accused.

According to the case statement, Nazrul became angry with Obaidur after a video described as showing the MP’s private moments spread on social media. Obaidur alleged he was beaten and an attempt was made on his life because he protested an alleged unethical relationship and was suspected of involvement in the video leak. Jamaat expelled Nazrul after an investigation found evidence of moral misconduct following another viral video.
