A case has been filed in Bhedarganj, Shariatpur, over allegations that a middle-aged woman was publicly assaulted after being accused of stealing cash and gold jewellery. The complaint names former union BNP president Anwar Hossain Molla and his associates, according to the victim's family. The incident occurred on Thursday in Chhoygaon village, and the woman's son, Golam Rabbi, filed the case with Bhedarganj police station.

A video of the alleged assault spread on social media and sparked anger locally. It shows two people holding the woman's hands while another person beats her with a stick. The footage also shows her falling to the ground while screaming before she is lifted and allegedly beaten again. The woman, Nargis Begum, was rescued in serious condition and admitted to Shariatpur Sadar Hospital, where she remains under treatment.

Nargis said she was forcibly taken from her home and beaten over a false theft allegation. Golam Rabbi called for justice, saying his mother was severely assaulted. Anwar Hossain Molla did not answer repeated phone calls seeking comment. Police said the written complaint has been registered as a case and efforts are under way to arrest the accused. A local human rights official urged that those responsible be brought under the law.
