Myanmar’s junta-backed government has identified more than 300,000 Rohingya sheltering in Bangladesh as registered or former residents of Rakhine State, its foreign ministry said in a statement issued Saturday. It said verified Rohingya would be taken back gradually if security conditions improve, while ruling out any repatriation or physical return process until security in Rakhine improves.

From a list of 828,824 refugees submitted by Bangladesh, Myanmar said it had verified information on 426,545 people. It confirmed 308,797 as registered or former Rakhine residents. Authorities said they could not verify the identities of 113,507 people and directly refused to accept 4,241, alleging involvement in “terrorist activities.” Myanmar also rejected claims that more than one million people had been displaced from Rakhine after the 2017 violence.

Myanmar said more than 540,000 people entered Bangladesh after the 2017 violence and more than 200,000 remained in northern Rakhine. The source says about 1.2 million Rohingya, including earlier arrivals, now live in camps in Cox’s Bazar and Bhasan Char. Continuing conflict in Rakhine and control of much of the state by the Arakan Army have stalled safe repatriation.
