An expatriate, Shahjahan Patwary, has died after an alleged attack carried out under the pretext of an anti-drug অভিযান in Chandpur Sadar’s Mahamaya area. Local sources said a group of youths held a procession and gathering in Mandari, Shahmahmudpur Union, on the night of August 5 in the name of an anti-drug campaign. Patwary called out to them after seeing them running around.

The youths then became angered and threw bricks and stones at him, seriously injuring him, according to multiple local sources. Residents rescued Patwary and took him to Chandpur 250-bed General Hospital, where the attending doctor declared him dead.

Patwary’s sister, Amena, alleged that a group of youths led by BNP leader Swapan Mahmud beat her brother to death. Chandpur Model Police Station officer-in-charge Fayez Ahmed said police received information about one person’s death and were sent to the scene. He said legal action would be taken following an investigation.
