The Cabinet Division of Bangladesh on Tuesday published the wealth statements of the advisers serving in the interim government. As of June 30, Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus reported total assets worth Tk 15 crore 62 lakh 44 thousand 65, up from Tk 14 crore 1 lakh 39 thousand 673 a year earlier. This marks an increase of Tk 1 crore 61 lakh 4 thousand 392 over the year. Yunus attributed the rise to factors such as encashment of savings certificates, growth in savings or fixed deposits, and inherited shares. His wife, Afrozi Yunus, reported assets of Tk 1 crore 27 lakh 63 thousand 360, down from Tk 2 crore 11 lakh 77 thousand 274 in the previous fiscal year, a decrease of Tk 84 lakh 13 thousand 914.

According to the Income Tax Act, a taxpayer’s total wealth includes all movable, immovable, financial, and capital assets. The disclosure follows Yunus’s August 25, 2024 address to the nation, where he emphasized transparency and anti-corruption measures. He had announced that all advisers would publish their wealth statements promptly and that the practice would become mandatory for all government officials. Yunus also mentioned plans to establish an ombudsman under Article 77 of the Constitution to strengthen anti-corruption efforts.
