Unidentified individuals set fire to the country’s first July Martyrs Memorial located in Hajiganj, Fatullah of Narayanganj early Tuesday around 3 a.m. Police officers stationed at the site quickly brought the fire under control, preventing major damage. No arrests have been made so far, and the identities of those responsible remain unknown.
Narayanganj Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Tarek Al Mehdi confirmed the incident and said CCTV footage from nearby roads and areas is being collected to identify those involved. Fatullah Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mahbub stated that the fire may have started when a burning cloth was thrown from a distance, igniting decorative fabric left from a July 16 commemorative event. He added that the fire was minor and quickly extinguished.
A video circulating on social media appeared to show a larger blaze, but the OC claimed it might have been generated using artificial intelligence technology. The July Martyrs Memorial was inaugurated in July 2025 to honor those killed in the 2024 July–August mass uprising.
