Six police officers, including a sub-inspector of the Detective Branch (DB), have been withdrawn in Habiganj following the escape of a listed drug dealer from police custody in Madhabpur. The incident occurred on June 15 during an anti-drug operation in Debnagar village under Dharmaghar Union, led by DB Sub-Inspector Saiful Islam. The suspect, Jewel Mia, reportedly fled while being handcuffed after a scuffle with police, during which two DB members were injured. Local residents, unaware that the plainclothes officers were police, became involved in the altercation.
On June 17, Superintendent of Police Tarek Mahmud reassigned the six officers to the district police lines citing administrative reasons. The withdrawn officers include DB SI Saiful Islam, three DB constables, and two constables from Habiganj Sadar Model Police Station. Officials have provided differing accounts regarding the presence of the Sadar police members at the scene.
The incident has sparked widespread discussion in Habiganj, with locals questioning whether lack of coordination and unclear police identification contributed to the suspect’s escape.
