Interim government Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus has called on citizens to maintain patience and discipline following the death of BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia. In a televised address to the nation at noon on Tuesday, he expressed deep sorrow and conveyed condolences on behalf of the nation to her family, political colleagues, and supporters. He announced three days of national mourning and a public holiday on the day of her funeral prayer. Dr. Yunus described Khaleda Zia as a revered figure in Bangladesh’s politics, noting her contributions to democracy, multiparty political culture, and the struggle for people’s rights. He said her uncompromising leadership against autocracy and fascism repeatedly guided the nation toward democratic restoration and inspired freedom. He emphasized that her long political journey and steadfast commitment to national sovereignty would remain unforgettable. Khaleda Zia passed away at 6 a.m. on December 30, 2025, while undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka. She was 80 years old and had been suffering from multiple chronic health complications.
