Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Detective Branch arrested former Awami League lawmaker Akhtaruzzaman, 73, from a residence in the capital's Gulshan area on Wednesday night. He was taken into DB custody after the operation. DMP Additional Commissioner for DB Mohammad Shafiqul Islam confirmed the arrest, saying Akhtaruzzaman faces multiple cases, including murder cases.

Investigators are examining his role in the relevant cases and his alleged involvement in recent activities of a banned organization. According to detective sources, surveillance has recently been increased over secret meetings, organizational communications and various programs involving leaders and activists of the banned organization. Detectives conducted the Gulshan operation after receiving information about Akhtaruzzaman's location.

Akhtaruzzaman had long been involved in Awami League politics and previously held important responsibilities at the party's central level. He represented Gazipur-3 in parliament from 1996 to 2001 and chaired the parliamentary standing committee related to the Housing and Public Works Ministry. He later served as administrator and chairman of the Gazipur District Council. His campaigning for the Gazipur-5 constituency in the 2024 12th national election was also discussed.
