Police in Ramganj, Lakshmipur, arrested two leaders of the banned organisation Awami Jubo League over fears of sabotage linked to the Awami League’s National Mourning Day observance on August 15. The arrests were made late Saturday night, police said.
Those arrested were Rashedul Hasan Rashed, former councillor of Ward No. 3 of Ramganj municipality and joint convener of the municipal Jubo League, and Morshedul Amin Babu, a member of the upazila Jubo League. Police and local sources said they had been trying to organise party activists from different areas to observe the day.
After receiving information about the effort, police began monitoring the two to maintain normal law and order and prevent possible sabotage. Ramganj police later conducted an operation and took them to the police station. Ramganj police station officer-in-charge Firoz Uddin Chowdhury said both detainees face multiple cases, including allegations involving terrorism and sabotage, and were detained to preserve peace and order.
