Shahinoor Akter Shyamoli, a primary school teacher from Chandpur, Bangladesh, who recently went viral for saying teachers cannot afford local chicken, has been found to own several properties, including a five-story building in Hajiganj, a one-story house in her native village, and a two-story house at her in-laws’ residence in Comilla. Facing social media backlash, Shyamoli clarified that her comment was metaphorical, meant to highlight the struggles of teachers and strengthen their movement for better pay and benefits. She emphasized that her intention was not personal but representative of teachers’ collective grievances. Shyamoli serves as a senior assistant teacher at Hajiganj Girls Government Primary School and vice president of the local teachers’ association, while her husband is a headmaster at a high school in Kachua.
