DUCSU Vice President Sadiq Kayem has alleged that Chhatra Dal activists attacked students and hall union leaders protesting at Dhaka University’s FH Hall. The protest followed allegations that a student was confined and tortured in the provost’s room. In a social media post on Monday, Kayem said at least 10 people, including the elected vice president and general secretary of the FH Hall union, were injured.
According to Kayem, students were demanding the release of CCTV footage of the alleged torture and the removal of the provost. He said DUCSU leaders and representatives from several hall unions who came to express solidarity with the movement were also attacked. He alleged that Chhatra Dal carried out the attack late at night after taking a position against the protest.
Kayem further alleged that the provost and university administration had delayed action until late at night before outsiders associated with Chhatra Dal were brought into the hall. He said the alleged attackers stated that no one from other halls would be allowed to stay in the FH Hall office. His post also included a screenshot of a national daily report containing the alleged victim’s account.
