A Russian couple was arrested in New York after scaling the spire of the Empire State Building to stage a marriage proposal. The pair, identified as Ivan Kuznetsov, 32, and Angelina Nikolau, 33, climbed to the antenna’s narrow top on Wednesday, displaying a black banner bearing a message about world peace. Their stunt, which they streamed on social media, ended when police took them into custody without incident. Authorities have charged them with trespassing, reckless endangerment, criminal mischief, and disorderly conduct.
The Empire State Building’s management described the act as an unauthorized intrusion, noting that visitors are not permitted to climb beyond the 102nd-floor observation deck. A spokesperson humorously remarked that the couple could have rented the deck through the building’s official proposal package instead. Nikolau’s father, Russian circus performer Dmitry Nikolau, said he was aware of his daughter’s plan and expressed no concern about her arrest.
The incident occurred amid heightened citywide excitement over upcoming celebrations and events, including the United States’ 250th Independence anniversary festivities.

A series of targeted killings in Chattogram and Raozan have sparked concern over how attackers are obtaining precise information about victims’ movements. The issue resurfaced after the June 13 murder of Jubo Dal leader Maksudul Haque Masud, who was shot dead in broad daylight at a local market. CCTV footage showed the attack lasted only minutes, prompting relatives to question whether someone within the administration was tracking and leaking his location. Police, however, said suspects confessed that local informants—not officials—provided information.
Security analysts warned that such killings will persist unless the masterminds behind the attackers are eliminated. Since August 2024, at least 35 murders have occurred in the region, many targeting BNP activists. Victims were often attacked while traveling, praying, or visiting relatives, suggesting attackers had accurate location data. Analysts noted that information on victims’ routes and schedules could come from local sources or technology-based surveillance.
Police officials stated there is no evidence that administrative personnel leaked data, though investigations continue. They pledged legal action if any official involvement is proven.

Railway operations on the Dhaka-Bhanga route through Shibchar in Madaripur have become risky due to repeated thefts of critical signaling equipment and cables. The incidents, which have increased in recent months, have disrupted the signaling system and forced railway staff to use manual methods to keep trains running. The thefts have caused delays and heightened safety concerns among passengers and railway workers.
According to railway officials, several thefts occurred between March and June 2026, including multiple incidents at Padma and Shibchar stations where track circuit components were stolen. The loss of these parts has rendered block systems inoperative, complicating train control and increasing the risk of accidents. Local residents and railway employees have demanded stronger security measures, including regular police patrols and permanent protection along the route.
Railway police acknowledged the challenges of patrolling the long stretch between Bhanga Junction and Padma Station but said patrols would be intensified to prevent further thefts.
