Kolkata Police’s Special Task Force (STF) has arrested Faisal Karim Masud, the prime accused in the murder of Osman Hadi, spokesperson of the Inquilab Mancha and face of the July Movement, along with another suspect named Alamgir Hossain. Both were detained from Bongaon in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, near the Bangladesh border. They were produced before the Bidhannagar court on Sunday, which ordered a 14-day police remand.
Police sources said the two Bangladeshi nationals had illegally crossed the border into India and were hiding in Bongaon. They reportedly attempted to re-enter Bangladesh when apprehended. Masud, aged 37, is from Patuakhali, and Alamgir, aged 34, is from Dhaka. STF officials stated that both suspects confessed to their involvement in Hadi’s killing and had entered India through the Meghalaya border, moving across several locations before settling in Bongaon.
A case has been filed under specific legal provisions, and investigators plan to question the suspects further while they remain in police custody.

Hadi was shot on December 12 last year in Dhaka’s Paltan area by helmeted assailants on a motorcycle. Faisal Karim Masud had been identified as one of the attackers, and the interim government had announced a reward of 5 million taka for information leading to his arrest.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has initiated an inquiry against the removed Managing Director of Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (WASA), Md. Abdus Salam Bapari, on allegations of laundering money abroad. CID Special Police Superintendent (Media) Jasim Uddin Khan confirmed the development on Sunday, March 8, 2026.
Preliminary findings indicate that Abdus Salam Bapari, who joined Dhaka WASA as an assistant engineer in 1991, allegedly transferred illicitly acquired funds overseas. He is accused of purchasing substantial immovable and movable assets in Canada, the United States, and other countries under his own name, his wife’s name, and those of associates. Investigators found that in 2018, he and his wife, Mahbubunnecha, bought a house in Toronto, Canada, valued at approximately 200 million Bangladeshi taka.
CID stated that the investigation is being conducted under the Money Laundering Prevention Act, 2012, and the Money Laundering Prevention Rules, 2019, to determine legal action based on the findings.
CID investigates ex-Dhaka WASA MD Abdus Salam Bapari over alleged foreign money laundering
A Dhaka court has ordered the publication of a gazette directing British MP Tulip Rizwana Siddiq and former RAJUK assistant legal adviser Sardar Mosharraf Hossain to appear before the court in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) over allegedly obtaining a flat illegally in Gulshan. The order was issued by Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Sabbir Faiz on March 8, with March 29 set for submission of a report on the matter.
Earlier, on February 18, the court accepted the charge sheet against Siddiq and Hossain and issued arrest warrants. On February 26, the court also directed Interpol to issue a red notice for Siddiq’s arrest. The ACC filed the case on April 15 of the previous year, accusing Siddiq and two former RAJUK officials of misusing power to occupy and register a flat in Eastern Housing Limited’s Gulshan-2 project without payment.
The ACC later submitted the charge sheet on December 11 under multiple sections of the Penal Code and the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1947. Siddiq had previously been sentenced to six years in prison in three separate cases related to plot allocation fraud.

A Dhaka court has sentenced three men to two and a half years in prison each for killing 20 dogs in the Lichu Bagan area of Dhaka’s Dhalpur in 2021. The verdict was delivered on Sunday by Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Zakir Hossain. The convicted individuals are Md. Abul Khayer, Md. Apu, and Md. Manik. Manik was present in court and sent to jail after the verdict, while arrest warrants were issued for the two absconding convicts.
According to court officials, each convict received two years of imprisonment and a fine of Tk 1,000 under Section 16(b), with an additional 15 days if unpaid. They were also sentenced to six months under Section 16(a) of the Animal Welfare Act 2019, along with another Tk 1,000 fine and 15 days in default. Both sentences will run concurrently, resulting in two years of imprisonment.
The case was filed on January 25, 2021, by Maruful Haque of Animal Lovers of Bangladesh after the accused were identified from video footage. The investigation concluded in September 2021, and the trial began in May 2024, leading to Sunday’s judgment.
Three men jailed in Dhaka for killing 20 dogs in 2021
A Dhaka court has rejected the bail petition of journalist Anis Alamgir in a corruption case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). The decision was delivered on Sunday by Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Sabbir Foyez after a hearing. Defense lawyer Taslima Jahan Popy confirmed the court’s decision.
The ACC filed the case on January 15, accusing Alamgir of acquiring wealth beyond known income sources and money laundering. Investigators alleged that he possessed immovable assets worth Tk 2.5 million and movable assets worth Tk 38.46 million, totaling Tk 40.9 million. His legitimate income was reported as Tk 9.9 million, leaving an unexplained difference of Tk 32.6 million, or about 77 percent of his total assets. Alamgir had earlier been arrested under the Anti-Terrorism Act in December and later received bail from the High Court in that case on March 5.
The court’s latest decision means Alamgir will remain in custody as the ACC continues its investigation into the alleged illicit assets.
Dhaka court denies bail to journalist Anis Alamgir in ACC corruption case
A man named Ridoy, aged 26, was killed in a mob beating early Sunday morning in Siddhirganj, Narayanganj. According to police and eyewitnesses, Ridoy, originally from Rajshahi and residing in the Sanarpar area, was part of a three-member group attempting a robbery in the Jalakuri Koraitola area around 6 a.m. The group arrived on a motorcycle and tried to rob a pedestrian at knifepoint.
Local residents intervened, managing to capture Ridoy while the other two suspects escaped on foot. The crowd then beat Ridoy, resulting in his death at the scene before police arrived. Enraged locals also set fire to the motorcycle used in the attempted robbery. Police later recovered a knife and a machete from the scene.
Siddhirganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Abdul Barik confirmed that the suspect died before officers reached the location. The two fleeing suspects remain at large, and further investigation is underway.
Mob kills suspected snatcher in Siddhirganj during early morning robbery attempt
Six sound grenades were recovered from a bag near the main gate of the Supreme Court in Dhaka on Sunday afternoon. Police were alerted after suspicious objects were spotted near the Chief Justice’s entrance. The area was quickly cordoned off, and security was heightened. The grenades were later defused at Suhrawardy Udyan by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police bomb disposal unit after examination.
According to court and eyewitness sources, the bomb disposal team arrived around 2 p.m., safely removed the grenades, and collected evidence for investigation. The devices have been taken into police custody for further analysis. Authorities have not yet identified who placed the grenades or their motive.
Following the incident, law enforcement agencies have reinforced security around the Supreme Court premises. Police have launched an investigation and are reviewing CCTV footage to identify those responsible for the attempted security breach.

Mob kills suspected mugger during attempted robbery in Siddhirganj, Narayanganj
A construction worker named Nairul Islam, aged 26, was killed when a wall collapsed on him during drain construction work in the Courtpara neighborhood near the Dhaka bus stand area of Chapainawabganj municipality on Sunday, March 8, 2026, around 11 a.m. The deceased was the son of the late Saiful Islam from Begula village in Gobratala Union of Sadar upazila.
According to local sources, Nairul had been working on a municipal drainage project since morning when a nearby residential wall suddenly collapsed, burying him underneath. He died on the spot as a result of the incident. Police from Chapainawabganj Sadar Model Police Station later visited the site.
Officer-in-Charge Nure Alam confirmed that legal procedures are underway following the fatal accident, which occurred during the ongoing drain construction work.

In Jhenaidah, angry students set fire to three buses and vandalized a fuel pump on Saturday night following the killing of Al Miraj Nirab, chief organizer of the Jhenaidah Sadar unit of the anti-discrimination student movement. Police said Nirab was beaten to death by workers at Taj Filling Station after an argument over fuel purchase. The incident triggered violent protests at the central bus terminal, where buses of J Line, JR, and Royal Paribahan were burned. Firefighters later brought the blaze under control.
At the same time, protesters attacked and vandalized Srijoni Fuel Pump at Arappur Bus Stand, owned by Awami League leader Harunur Rashid. Abu Hasnat Tanaim, joint member secretary of The Red July organization, condemned the killing and demanded a fair investigation and exemplary punishment for those responsible. Nirab’s foster father, Abul Kashem, also demanded justice, saying his son was beaten for protesting discriminatory fuel sales.
Police reported that the situation is now under control, with additional forces, RAB, and army patrols deployed across Jhenaidah to prevent further unrest.
Protesters torch buses and vandalize fuel pump in Jhenaidah after student leader’s killing
A youth named Al Miraz Nirab, a joint chief organizer of the anti-discrimination student movement in Jhenaidah Sadar, was beaten to death at a petrol pump in Jhenaidah on Saturday night. The incident occurred at Messrs Taj Filling Station near the central bus terminal when Nirab came to buy fuel. Police said he arrived around 8 p.m. with a plastic bottle, but the pump staff refused to sell fuel that way. Later, seeing another person being served in a bottle, Nirab protested, leading to an altercation. The employees then beat him with sticks, causing fatal injuries. He was taken to Jhenaidah Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Three employees have been detained by RAB-6.
Nirab, aged 23, was from Barobazar’s Badurgacha village in Kaliganj upazila and ran a fast-food business near Jhenaidah Government Boys’ School. He was also a second-year honors student at Jhenaidah Government KC College. Police said the detainees are being interrogated and legal action will follow after investigation.
The filling station is owned by Harunur Rashid, also known as Srijoni Harun, a former district council chairman and expelled Awami League leader.
Student leader beaten to death at Jhenaidah petrol pump, three employees detained
A senior journalist, Zahid Iqbal, was allegedly harassed by a mob in Dhaka’s Nikunja area on Saturday evening after publishing a report on road occupation. The incident occurred near Jamtala’s Zahid Iqbal Chattar, where local resident Nurul Islam’s son, Md. Sabuj, is accused of leading a group that surrounded and threatened the journalist. Police from Khilkhet station, led by Sub-Inspector Ujjal, visited the scene following the incident.
CCTV footage reportedly shows around 30 people encircling Zahid Iqbal and intimidating him, while some of his friends were also threatened. Witness Matiur Rahman Swapon said the group demanded deletion of the published report and issued an ultimatum. Zahid Iqbal explained that the report highlighted how part of a narrow road in Nikunja had been illegally walled off, worsening public movement.
Khilkhet Police Officer-in-Charge Abdul Alim confirmed that an investigation is underway and legal action will be taken against those responsible. Local residents identified several others allegedly involved and called for strict action, saying such intimidation undermines democratic values and press freedom.
