In another operation on Friday evening, a team from the Department of Narcotics Control raided a grocery shop on Upazila Road in Gobindaganj town and arrested shopkeeper Bichitra Barman, 42, with 102 yaba tablets. He is from Kochmordan Baroipara village in Gumaniganj Union. Gobindaganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mozammel Haque confirmed both arrests and stated that two separate cases have been filed.

The arrested individuals were sent to Gaibandha District Jail through the court following the legal procedures, according to police authorities.

A young man named Md Faruk, 28, from Purbo Bara Veyola Union in Chakaria, Cox’s Bazar, has allegedly defrauded several Bangladeshi expatriates in Saudi Arabia of large sums of money and fled back to Bangladesh. Victims claim Faruk took millions of taka through false investment promises, including a petrol pump venture in Abha province. One victim, expatriate worker Mohammad Abu Saleh from Lohagara, Chattogram, alleged that Faruk took 45,000 Saudi riyals—about 1.45 million taka—promising monthly profits that never materialized. Another victim, Shahajul Islam from Kushtia, said Faruk embezzled six lakh taka from a welfare lottery fund and also took 250,000 taka from a mobile banking agent. Saleh said he is preparing to take legal action.

The acting chairman of Purbo Bara Veyola Union Parishad confirmed knowing Faruk but said he could not verify whether the fraud allegations were true.

A man named Md. Shakil, aged 40, was killed and another person injured in a head-on collision between a jeep and a motorcycle in Fatikchhari upazila of Chattogram on Saturday morning. The accident occurred on the Khiram–Nanupur road at a place called Lambatila. The deceased, Shakil, was the son of Abdul Kader from Khiram Union’s Muktijoddha Abdul Baten Bari. The injured motorcyclist was identified as 39-year-old Alauddin Talukder.

According to local and police sources, Shakil and Alauddin were traveling by motorcycle from Chattogram city to Shakil’s village home in Moggkata of Khiram Union when the collision took place. Locals rescued the victims and took them to Fatikchhari Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared Shakil dead. Alauddin received primary treatment before being referred to Chattogram Medical College Hospital for advanced care.

Fatikchhari Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Selim said police had reached the scene after receiving the report and that necessary legal steps would be taken once the team returned.

A fatal road accident occurred on Saturday morning, January 17, 2026, when an Ena Paribahan bus and a pickup van collided head-on on the Sunamganj–Sylhet regional highway near Buraigaon village in Chhatak upazila. Police in Rajbari have arrested businessman and former district Jubo Dal president Abul Hashem Sujon and his driver Kamal Hossain Sardar for allegedly killing a petrol pump worker by running him over with a vehicle. The incident occurred around 4:30 a.m. on Friday at Karim Filling Station in Goaland Mor, Rajbari Sadar upazila. The victim, Ripon Saha, aged 28, was the son of Pabitra Saha from Char Khankhanapur village.

According to police and eyewitnesses, a black Pajero jeep arrived at the station, took about five thousand taka worth of octane, and attempted to flee without paying. Rabeya Islam Shampa, wife of slain Inkilab Mancha spokesperson Shahid Sharif Osman Hadi, has publicly demanded justice for her husband’s killing. A six-year-old girl named Niha Moni was found dead inside a septic tank in Mochagora area of Jatrapur Union, Muradnagar upazila of Cumilla on Friday around 12:30 p.m. Her mouth and hands were bound with tape. Locals discovered the body and detained a 20-year-old man named Rasel, who was later handed over to police after being beaten by the crowd.

According to family members, Niha Moni, daughter of expatriate Sharif Mia, was a first-grade student at a local kindergarten. Her grandmother said the child had been playing with other girls when Rasel was seen nearby, after which she went missing. Locals alleged that Rasel was a drug addict who had previously harassed children and demanded exemplary punishment.
