Police in Manikganj’s Saturia upazila have arrested Md. Saiduzzaman Talukder Daud, a former general secretary of the local Chhatra League unit, in connection with a sabotage case linked to the anti-discrimination student movement. Two young men from Madaripur, Bangladesh — Jafar Bepari (45) and Sirajul Hawlader (25) — have died in the Mediterranean Sea near Libya while attempting to reach Italy illegally by boat. They left home on September 1, traveling through several countries before boarding a motorboat with about 50 others on October 14. The boat ran out of fuel mid-sea and drifted for a week, during which several passengers, including the two Bangladeshis, died from cold. A Dhaka court has imposed a travel ban on former Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) Director General Md Harun Or Rashid, his wife Fateha Parvin Luna, and their two daughters. The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has filed a case against former Akhaura municipality mayor and Awami League leader Md. Takjil Khalifa Kajol for allegedly amassing illegal wealth worth over Tk 21 million. In a shocking revelation, the body of customs officer Abdul Ahad, who was abducted six years ago from Chattogram, has been found in Feni’s Chhagalnaiya area. Nearly three decades after the mysterious death of Bangladeshi film icon Salman Shah, a Dhaka court has ordered the filing of a murder case, naming 11 individuals including his former wife, Samira Haque. In a plot that sounds straight out of a movie, a jeweler in Manikganj staged a fake robbery at his own store to deceive everyone. Police said that 35-year-old shop owner Shubho Das of Abhi Jewellers, located in the Swarnakar Patti area, hired three men—Sohan, Amanat, and Sharif—for Tk 5 lakh to act out a robbery. On the night of October 4, the hired men entered the shop wearing caps, held Shubho at knifepoint, and took away 22 bhori (around 40 lakh taka worth) of gold ornaments. To make the act convincing, they even injured Shubho before fleeing. Locals rushed him to the hospital, believing it was a real attack. However, police investigation later revealed that Shubho had orchestrated the entire event. All four suspects were arrested from Shailipara, Pouli area, and police are now probing possible financial motives and other hidden agendas.
