Karnaphuli Paper Mills (KPM) has supplied 914 tons of paper to the Election Commission (EC) through the Bangladesh Stationery Office (BSO) ahead of the scheduled deadline. The paper, valued at over Tk 110 million, will be used for printing ballots and other materials for the upcoming 13th National Parliamentary Election. KPM Managing Director Mohammad Shahid Ullah confirmed the delivery on Sunday, January 11, 2026, noting that the supply was completed before the January 15 deadline.

According to KPM, the paper order included brown, green, and pink sheets specifically requested for election use. The mill, located in Kaptai, Rangamati, had set a production target of 3,500 tons for the 2025–2026 fiscal year. In addition to the EC, KPM will supply another 1,200 tons of paper to 11 other institutions, including Dhaka University, education boards, and the National University, through the BSO.

KPM, a state-owned enterprise under the Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC), is one of South Asia’s largest paper mills and has produced 19,030 tons of paper as of January 11, 2026.

Bangladesh’s Election Commission (EC) will start formal dialogues with political parties from Thursday, November 13, to discuss recent amendments to the Representation of the People Order (RPO) and the updated electoral code of conduct. EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed confirmed the schedule, noting that the list of invited parties has not yet been finalized. The discussions aim to ensure cooperation for a fair election and to hear parties’ own proposals. The revised code bans posters and the use of plastic materials, while allowing festoons, leaflets, and digital displays. Ahmed also clarified that the EC has not received any directive regarding a referendum. Despite a planned lockdown program by the banned Awami League on the same day, the EC intends to proceed with the dialogue as scheduled.

Election Commission to hold talks with political parties Thursday on new election code and cooperation

The Election Commission (EC) of Bangladesh has confirmed that it is fully prepared to conduct the 13th National Parliamentary Election, likely to be held in the first or second week of February. Senior Election Commissioner Abdur Rahmanel Masud told the Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha that all major election preparations, including the arrival of indelible ink from abroad, have been completed. He emphasized that maintaining a peaceful law and order situation is vital not only for the election but also for the nation’s overall stability and development. The EC aims to rebuild public trust following previous irregularities and is committed to ensuring a fair, neutral, and participatory election.

According to the EC Secretariat, procurement of election materials, legal revisions, and voter list updates will be finalized by mid-November, with the election schedule expected in early December. Bangladesh now has 127.6 million registered voters, including 1,230 third-gender voters. A total of 42,761 polling centers and 244,649 booths have been designated across 300 constituencies. For the first time, expatriate Bangladeshis will be able to vote through postal ballots, marking a significant step toward inclusivity and modernization of the electoral process.

The Bangladesh government has issued a major amendment to the Representation of the People Order (RPO) ahead of the 13th National Election, introducing significant new rules and modernized electoral procedures. Under the revised RPO, anyone declared a fugitive by a court will be ineligible to contest parliamentary elections. The amendment also reintroduces the “No Vote” option in single-candidate constituencies, raises the candidate’s security deposit from Tk 20,000 to Tk 50,000, and increases penalties for code of conduct violations to a maximum fine of Tk 1.5 lakh.

The new provisions expand the definition of law enforcement to include the armed forces, allowing greater deployment during elections. IT-supported postal voting is introduced for expatriates, government employees outside their constituencies, and those in custody. False affidavits may result in post-election disqualification, while AI misuse and misinformation are classified as electoral offenses. Additionally, the Election Commission (EC) can now annul results for entire constituencies in case of irregularities.

Election Commission introduces stricter RPO rules barring fugitives and modernizing the voting process

A Dhaka court has ordered the imprisonment of Advocate Abu Sayeed Sagar after rejecting his bail plea in a case filed over alleged vote rigging, attacks, and attempted murder of BNP-backed lawyers at the Supreme Court. The order was issued on Sunday by Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Sabbir Foyez, following a hearing where the prosecution opposed bail. According to Additional Public Prosecutor Azizul Haque Didar, Sagar surrendered before the court seeking bail but was sent to jail after the plea was denied. The case was filed on August 14 by Supreme Court Bar Association official Md Rabiul Islam, naming former Law Minister Anisul Huq and 74 others as accused. The allegations stem from violent incidents on March 14–15, 2023, where pro-BNP lawyers were reportedly attacked, injured, and subjected to harassment by police and ruling-party supporters inside the Bar Association premises.
