Chuadanga is enduring an intense heatwave, with temperatures recorded at 36.8°C on Saturday evening, 36.7°C at 3 p.m., and 34.8°C at noon. The previous days also saw extreme heat, with temperatures reaching 37.3°C on Thursday and Friday, and 37.2°C on Wednesday. The scorching conditions have brought daily life to a standstill, as residents struggle under both high temperatures and prolonged power cuts.

Officials from the local electricity offices reported a significant power shortage. The zonal office, serving 84,000 customers, has a regular demand of 105 megawatts but receives only 77 megawatts, resulting in a 30 percent deficit. The West Zone office faces a daily shortfall of 5–6 megawatts against a 24-megawatt demand. The combination of heat and load-shedding has caused severe hardship, particularly for children, the elderly, and laborers.

According to the Chuadanga weather observatory, humidity levels ranged from 47 to 62 percent during the day, intensifying the discomfort caused by the heatwave.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has forecast rainfall across all eight divisions starting Sunday, April 26, 2026, following a prolonged heatwave. The agency said moderate to heavy rain may continue in parts of the country for the next five days, potentially easing the ongoing heatwave. Rainfall was recorded in several northern and northeastern districts on Saturday, while mild heat persisted in 20 districts, mainly in Khulna Division.

Meteorologists indicated that rainfall activity is expected to increase gradually, with heavy to very heavy showers likely in Rangpur, Mymensingh, and Sylhet divisions. A low-pressure extension from West Bengal to the North Bay of Bengal is influencing the weather pattern. Day and night temperatures are expected to drop slightly nationwide as rain intensifies.

Experts noted that the intensity and extent of the heatwave have been decreasing since midweek. They added that, unlike in 2023 and 2024, there is no likelihood of a prolonged heatwave this year due to intermittent rainfall expected throughout the period.

Residents of eight villages in Sirajganj’s Raiganj upazila depend on a fragile bamboo bridge over the Karatoa River at Kamarbari in Chandikona Union, as no permanent bridge has been built there. Every day, students, farmers, traders, and patients cross the unstable structure at great personal risk to reach schools, markets, and healthcare facilities.

Locals said the lack of a bridge near the Dhaka–Bogura highway severely disrupts communication between the river’s two banks. Farmers face major difficulties transporting rice, vegetables, and other produce to markets, often losing fair prices due to the bridge’s narrow and unsafe condition. The situation worsens during the monsoon when the current strengthens and the bridge becomes slippery, increasing the risk of accidents.

Local residents have long demanded a permanent bridge to ease their hardship. The Raiganj Upazila LGED engineer stated that the need for a bridge is under assessment and a proposal will be sent to higher authorities after verification.

Member of Parliament S M Jilani from Gopalganj-3 (Kotalipara-Tungipara) stated that saving canals is essential for saving farmers. He said that active canals help farmers irrigate their lands easily and reduce waterlogging. Due to long-term blockage by water hyacinths, local farmers had been facing difficulties in irrigation and drainage. Considering their needs, he initiated a canal cleaning program.

On Saturday, April 25, Jilani joined the cleaning of the Konervita-Ramnagar canal in Sadullapur Union of Kotalipara upazila. The event aimed to restore water flow and support agricultural activities in the area.

Upazila BNP President S M Mohiuddin welcomed the initiative, calling it timely for solving farmers’ problems. He expressed the intention to continue such public-benefit activities under Jilani’s leadership. Several BNP and affiliated organization leaders and activists also participated in the cleanup drive.

The Water Development Board (Paubi) has issued a forecast warning of sudden flooding in Sunamganj district. The notice, signed by Executive Engineer Mamun Hawlader on Friday afternoon, stated that moderate to heavy rainfall is expected on April 27, followed by heavy to very heavy rainfall from April 28 to 30. Water levels in major rivers may rise above the danger mark, creating a risk of flash floods starting April 28.

The forecast has caused concern among local farmers, particularly those cultivating crops in the haor areas. The notice warned that the impending floods could damage standing crops. Farmers have been advised to harvest paddy that has ripened at least 80 percent as soon as possible to minimize potential losses.

Authorities have not yet detailed any emergency measures, but the advisory indicates heightened vigilance in the region ahead of the predicted rainfall period.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has forecast storms and rain in parts of the northern region even as a mild heatwave continues across the country. In a forecast issued for inland river ports from 5 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, the department said Rangpur and Mymensingh regions may experience gusty or squally winds at speeds of 45 to 60 kilometers per hour, accompanied by thunderstorms and rain. River ports in these areas have been advised to display cautionary signal number one.

A separate five-day forecast issued on Friday evening said an extension of a low-pressure area stretching from West Bengal to the North Bay of Bengal could bring rain and hail in several parts of the country in the coming days. Temporary gusty winds, lightning, and scattered hail are likely in parts of Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal, and Sylhet divisions. Other regions may remain partly cloudy but mostly dry.

Day and night temperatures are expected to remain nearly unchanged, with the mild heatwave persisting over several districts including Dhaka, Rajshahi, and Khulna.

The Sugandha River in Nalchity upazila of Jhalakathi has turned into a massive garbage dump due to unplanned waste disposal by the municipality. Every day, household, market, and other wastes are dumped in open areas near the old steamer ghat, and rain or tidal water carries the waste directly into the river. This has caused severe water and air pollution, turning the once-clear river into a foul-smelling, waste-filled waterway.

Local residents report unbearable stench and say the river water is no longer usable. People living along the river are suffering from skin diseases, stomach problems, and respiratory issues due to contact with the polluted water. Environmental experts warn that unplanned dumping threatens aquatic life and vegetation, potentially destroying the region’s ecological balance and posing serious long-term health risks.

Residents and environmentalists are calling for the immediate construction of a modern dumping station, regular waste collection, and protective measures for the riverbank. Municipal officials acknowledge the urgent need for a dumping site but say no land has yet been allocated for the project.

Bangladesh’s Environment Minister Abdul Awal Mintu announced that the interim government will maintain its existing decision on tourism control for Saint Martin’s Island. According to a report citing the minister, scientific field research showed that the island’s environment, ecosystem, and biodiversity improved after a nine-month closure to tourists. The government had finalized the tourism regulation policy in 2024 after nearly seven years of consultation with relevant agencies.

Under the policy, a maximum of 2,000 tourists are allowed to visit the island daily from November to January, while tourism remains closed from February to October to allow natural recovery. The minister said the restriction has yielded positive results and must continue to preserve the country’s only coral island and its ecological balance.

However, some residents have been demanding the withdrawal of the ban, arguing that tourism is the main source of income for most islanders and that the restrictions have severely affected the local economy and livelihoods.

A heatwave that has persisted for five consecutive days across 16 districts of Bangladesh showed signs of weakening on Friday, April 24, 2026. The Bangladesh Meteorological Department reported that the intensity and coverage of the heatwave have gradually decreased compared to earlier in the week, when it affected up to 27 districts. The highest temperature recorded on Friday was 37.8°C in Rajshahi, down from 40°C earlier in the week.

Meteorologist Khondaker Hafizur Rahman said the heatwave’s intensity and spread are expected to decline further by Saturday. He added that from Sunday, rain is likely to increase across the country, which could help ease the ongoing heatwave. The forecast indicates possible moderate to heavy rainfall in parts of Rangpur, Dhaka, Mymensingh, and Sylhet divisions, with scattered showers in Rajshahi, Khulna, Barishal, and Chattogram divisions.

Despite the slight drop in temperature, high humidity levels have made conditions feel extremely hot, causing widespread discomfort. The weather office expects the rainfall trend to continue for several days, bringing relief from the oppressive heat.

A large ice block above Mount Everest Base Camp has forced hundreds of climbers and local guides to suspend their ascent toward the summit. Nepal’s Department of Mountaineering official Himlal Gautam said on Friday that the ice barrier, or serac, between Base Camp and Camp One was unstable and unsafe for passage. Climbers are currently waiting at the base camp while authorities monitor the situation.

According to government data, 410 foreign climbers have been granted permits to attempt Everest this spring season, which typically ends in late May. Experienced Sherpas, known as “Icefall Doctors,” usually complete rope and ladder installations across the Khumbu Icefall by mid-April, but this year the work has been delayed due to the unstable serac. The Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee plans to conduct an aerial survey to assess the risk, with its chairman Lama Kaji Sherpa warning that avalanche danger remains until the ice melts to a safer level.

The Khumbu Icefall is one of the most perilous sections of the Everest route, and a similar ice collapse in 2014 killed 16 Sherpa guides, marking one of the deadliest incidents in the mountain’s history.
