A devastating fire broke out at Green City Market in Rupganj, Narayanganj, around 2 AM on Wednesday. Kolkata police have sought a 'Lookout Notice' against 69 Bangladeshi nationals accused of obtaining Indian passports using forged documents. These individuals, now residing abroad with Indian passports, will be restricted from traveling to other countries if the notice is issued. Any attempt to leave their current country of residence will be flagged to Kolkata police. The investigation began in late 2024 following allegations of passport fraud at Bhawanipur police station, leading to the arrest of 10 individuals, including a retired district intelligence officer and a Bangladeshi national. Of the 121 fraudulent passport applications, 73 passports have already been issued, and at least 20 individuals have traveled abroad using them.

At least six migrants lost their lives, and 40 remain missing after a boat capsized near Lampedusa, Italy, the United Nations refugee agency confirmed on Wednesday. The Italian Coast Guard has so far rescued ten individuals and resumed search operations at dawn to locate more survivors.

A fifth-grade student accused of attempting to rape a four-year-old girl in Jashore has been taken into police custody. However, a group of enraged students repeatedly attempted to snatch him from police custody, injuring a constable in the process.

According to the child’s father, he and his wife were away for work when they returned home to find their neighbor’s son attempting to assault their daughter. News of the incident spread, prompting students from Jashore Government MM College and Zilla School to intervene. A clash erupted between the protesters and the suspect’s family, leading to a tense standoff before police secured the suspect and transported him to the station.

Two employees of the Raipura Upazila Election Office in Narsingdi have been arrested for illegally selling National ID (NID) data in exchange for money. The detainees are Nahidul Islam, a data entry operator, and Ashikul Islam, a scanning operator.

Election Officer Din Mohammad Russell stated that a four-member investigative committee from the National Identity Registration Division verified the allegations before making the arrests. Authorities found evidence of 1.2 million BDT in transactions in Ashikul’s mobile banking account, while Nahidul’s account showed transactions worth approximately 200,000 BDT.

Hefazat-e-Islam’s Joint Secretary General, Maulana Azizul Haque, has strongly condemned the Israeli military’s attacks on Gaza, accusing them of violating the ceasefire agreement. Police have recovered the body of Maulana Lutfur Rahman (72), a senior scholar of Al Jamia Imdadiya Madrasa and the khatib of Bottola Kachari Mosque, from a rented house near the historic Sholakia Eidgah in Kishoreganj. The victim’s wife discovered his body with his throat slit inside a washroom on Wednesday afternoon after hearing sudden screams. He was rushed to the emergency department of a medical college hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Twenty-one Bangladeshi men, women, and children who were trafficked to India with promises of work have been repatriated to Bangladesh after serving various sentences. The Indian police transferred them to the Benapole border. Rights organization, Rights Jessore, has provided legal assistance to 10 individuals, while Justice and Care has assisted 11 others. These individuals were detained for illegal entry into India at different border points. A representative from Justice and Care mentioned that if the repatriated Bangladeshis identify the traffickers and seek legal aid, assistance will be provided.

Hifazat-e-Islam’s central leader, Allama Mhuimuddin Rabbani, stated that while Hifazat does not engage in politics or seek power, political parties must align themselves with Hifazat’s demands. He emphasized that no one can attain power by bypassing Hifazat. He also criticized the current government for its oppressive tactics against Hifazat over the past 16 years, which resulted in numerous martyrs. In Gazipur’s Konabari, over 800 workers at a garment factory went on strike demanding their Eid bonuses, holiday pay, and half of this month’s salary. The strike began at 8:30 AM, and workers expressed dissatisfaction with the factory’s management, accusing them of neglecting their demands. The workers voiced frustration over the owner’s refusal to address their issues, particularly around the Eid holiday. Sample man Shamsuddin mentioned that staff would receive their overdue payments, but workers still struggle to secure their rightful wages.

In Netrokona, a human chain was formed demanding the release of Abdul Hamid (65), who was arrested on charges of raping his mentally disabled daughter. Speakers at the protest stated that Hamid has been serving humanity since the COVID-19 pandemic and was wrongly accused based on fabricated claims from his opponents.
