Rejecting the army’s claim that the assault was a “mob attack,” Rashed countered: “If it was a mob, then it was created by army personnel themselves.”

Ali Riaz, Vice-Chairman of the National Consensus Commission, has said that political leaders’ pledge to guarantee press freedom would be the greatest reform in Bangladesh’s democracy.
Speaking at the Daily Star office, he urged journalists to continue fighting for their rights and not wait for government intervention. He criticized media owners, saying they exploit journalists knowing there will be little protest.
Riaz further argued that the press had been instrumental in sustaining what he termed a “fascist regime” for the past 16 years, and that accountability must be demanded. “A shopkeeper cannot be the fourth estate,” he remarked, underscoring the need for genuine institutional independence.

Chhatra Dal activists at Rajshahi University locked the office of the RAKSU treasurer on Sunday, demanding voting rights for first-year students in the upcoming Rajshahi University Central Students’ Union elections.

They argued that freshmen have paid RAKSU fees upon admission and therefore deserve the right to vote, as is allowed in Jahangirnagar University. Some university teachers have also expressed solidarity with the demand.

Clashes broke out between the protesters and coordinators of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement during the demonstration.

Meanwhile, Sunday marks the final day for submitting nomination papers for the election. The final candidate list will be published on September 11 after scrutiny.

Adviser on Home Affairs Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has alleged that the ruling Awami League is attempting to derail the upcoming elections and urged the public and political parties to resist such moves.

He emphasized that the unity forged among political forces after the fall of the “fascist government” must be preserved in the greater interest of the nation. “If cracks appear in this unity, others may exploit the situation to create chaos,” he warned.

Jahangir also said that law enforcement agencies are prepared to ensure a fair election, but cooperation from political parties is essential. He reaffirmed that ensuring people’s participation in the 13th National Parliamentary Elections is a key priority.

“Compared to the long-standing smear campaigns with edited photos and videos against me, your legal approach is a much better option.”

Brigadier General Md Asaduzzaman, Director of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), has said that GOP President Nurul Haque Nur, who is currently under intensive care, may be released within a week if his condition continues to improve.

Nur has multiple injuries, including fractures to his nose and jaw, an eye injury, and internal brain hemorrhage. CT scan reports, however, indicate gradual recovery. Doctors plan to move him from the ICU to a general ward soon.

“He is still in some trauma, but with time the fractured bones will heal, and the brain hemorrhage is also improving,” said Asaduzzaman.

Maulana Mamunul Haque, President of Shapla Smriti Sangsad, has criticized the July Declaration for omitting references to the 2013 Shapla Square crackdown, saying both Nobel Laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus and the interim government must be held accountable. Speaking at an event, he said Shapla’s blood sacrifice ignited the spirit of 2024 and vowed that Shapla’s legacy must become a cornerstone of future Bangladesh. He also announced the formation of “Shapla Shaheed Guardians Forum” to support families of victims. At the same event, Jamaat leader Abdul Halim argued that the past 15 years distorted the image of Islamic scholars, while NCP leader Abdul Hannan Masud warned that unless the Constitution is reformed, “Shapla, 2013, and 2024 will return.” BNP leader Kamruzzaman Ratan added that if VP Nur’s blood goes in vain, “future generations of bearded and pious people will also face humiliation.”

BNP leader Dr. AZM Zahid Hossain has alleged that the attack on Ganadhikar Parishad convener Nurul Haque Nur was part of a wider “domestic and international conspiracy.” Visiting Nur at the hospital, Dr. Zahid said the assault was politically motivated and orchestrated by elements within the administration still active after the events of August 5. He added that both Khaleda Zia and Tarique Rahman are personally monitoring Nur’s health condition and urged the interim government to ensure full medical care for all those injured.

Attack on Nur Part of Domestic and Foreign Conspiracy: BNP Leader

A writ petition has been filed in the High Court challenging the candidacy of SM Farhad, the Islami Chhatra Shibir nominee for General Secretary in the upcoming Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Daksu) elections.
The petition was lodged by BM Fahmida Alam, Liberation War and Mass Movement Affairs Secretary of the Aparajeyo 71–Odommo 24 panel, which is backed by left-leaning student bodies. Barrister Jyotirmoy Barua will argue the case on behalf of the petitioner.
The writ claims that Farhad previously served on a Bangladesh Chhatra League committee, raising questions over how he later emerged as a Shibir candidate. The Aparajeyo 71–Odommo 24 panel consists of factions from Bangladesh Chhatra Union, Socialist Student Front, and Bangladesh Chhatra League–BCL.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has declared that his party will not accept any attempt to replace Bangladesh’s current Constitution. Speaking to reporters, Fakhrul emphasized that the existing Constitution is tied to the nation’s Liberation War and independence struggle, and while errors can be corrected, drafting a new charter is unacceptable. He added that any unresolved issues must be debated in Parliament, as “no constitutional change can bypass it.” Fakhrul also insisted that timely elections are essential for democratic transition and that despite political rhetoric, all parties—including Jamaat, which has already begun campaigning—are expected to participate in the upcoming polls.

BNP leader Hasnat Abdullah has warned that opposition figures risk suffering the same fate as Tarique Rahman—who was forced into exile after signing undertakings—if systemic rules are not changed. He stressed that BNP seeks both elections and reforms, including guarantees that citizens will not face arbitrary detention without trial. Hasnat also acknowledged recent positive outreach from BNP leader Rumeen Farhana, who had sent representatives to check on internal disputes and even provided gifts as a gesture of goodwill.

Jamaat-e-Islami Assistant Secretary General Maulana Rafiqur Islam Khan has declared that the party is fully prepared for elections “even if they are held tomorrow.” However, he stressed that justice for past atrocities, fundamental reforms, and the arrest of “fascist collaborators” embedded within the administration must come first. Speaking at a semi-annual conference in Bogura’s Shaheed Titu Auditorium, Rafiqur said that without a level playing field, any rushed election would not reflect the will of the people.
