The youth wing of the National Citizens Party (NCP), Jatiya Yuvashakti, organized a 'hurricane march' in Dhaka on Monday evening to protest what it called an unbearable increase in fuel prices. The procession began at Banglamotor and ended near the Paribagh petrol pump in Shahbagh. During a brief address after the march, Yuvashakti President Tarikul Islam accused the government of betraying its earlier promise not to raise fuel prices and criticized the timing of the latest hike during the Eid holidays.
Tarikul Islam alleged that the government’s decisions favor the wealthy areas of Gulshan and Banani while neglecting ordinary citizens. He further claimed that corruption in the energy sector continues under the current administration, similar to previous governments. Islam also criticized the Prime Minister for focusing on public relations rather than addressing citizens’ hardships.
Referring to the takeover of Islami Bank, he urged the post-July uprising government to engage with opposition parties on national issues and accused it of suppressing dissent. Other central and city leaders of Yuvashakti, including General Secretary Engineer Farhad Sohel, also spoke at the event.

A 70-foot statue of footballer Lionel Messi was removed from Lake Town, Kolkata, following claims by the state’s Public Works Department and Urban Development Minister Agnimitra Paul that its foundation bolts had loosened during a storm, posing safety risks. The statue, unveiled last December in Messi’s presence, had become a symbol of pride for sports-loving Bengalis. Authorities said it was taken down by crane to prevent accidents.
However, the removal has sparked criticism and questions among citizens about why the statue was not repaired instead of being completely removed. The report suggests that this action reflects a broader pattern of demolition and eviction under the current BJP government, which has been accused of prioritizing destruction over maintenance or improvement of existing structures.
Officials stated that the statue is currently in the custody of the Public Works Department and may later be relocated to Rabindra Sarobar or Eco Park, though the plan remains uncertain.

Mahfuz Alam, a key organizer of the July uprising and former adviser to the interim government, has clarified his stance on the ongoing debate over the Awami League’s political future. In a Facebook post on Monday evening, he described the current situation as a reflection of insecurity between two major parties, the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami, rooted in past political conflicts. He expressed concern that future political developments could marginalize those who fought against what he termed the League’s fascism, a risk he said has grown due to Jamaat’s alliance politics.
Alam criticized the older generation of political leaders for exploiting youth movements, arguing that young activists must now organize independently, build institutions, and strengthen their influence beyond politics. He urged them to focus on unity, long-term planning, and anti-fascist ideals rather than internal divisions.
Concluding his message, Alam called for courage and organizational strength to ensure that fascism, in any form, cannot return to the country’s political landscape.
