The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in West Bengal, led by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, has directed the creation of detention or holding centers in every district to confine alleged Bangladeshi and Rohingya entrants. The order, issued to state police at the end of the week, follows a central directive from India’s Ministry of Home Affairs requiring states to establish such centers for foreigners awaiting repatriation or identity verification. Similar facilities have already been set up in several other Indian states over the past year.
Reports indicate that many detained individuals in other states were later found to be Indian citizens, particularly Bengali-speaking Muslim migrant workers from West Bengal. Some detainees alleged mistreatment and inadequate food while held in temporary facilities such as community halls or office compounds. Activists have raised concerns about human rights violations and wrongful detentions.
Economist and Congress leader Prasenjit Bose questioned the necessity of these centers and demanded data on the number and identity of alleged illegal entrants in West Bengal. He stated that his formal requests for such information from the central government have gone unanswered.

Bangladesh Ansar and Village Defence Party (VDP) headquarters issued a clarification on Sunday following media reports alleging that three Ansar members were arrested for creating disorder at the Prime Minister’s darbar in Gazipur. The force stated that the individuals identified in the reports were actually volunteer VDP members, not Ansar personnel, and were not authorized participants in the event.
According to the official statement, participation in the Prime Minister’s darbar requires strict security clearance and prior approval, which the three individuals did not have. They were not permitted to attend or take part in any related program. After the event, an internal inquiry found evidence of suspicious involvement by the volunteers, leading to legal action against them for internal misconduct rather than for causing any disturbance at the darbar itself.
The Ansar-VDP emphasized that the 46th National Assembly event was conducted in an orderly manner, with all authorized members following proper protocols. The force reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining discipline, national security, and organizational integrity, warning that any actions undermining its image or internal order would face legal consequences.

Amid the ongoing conflict with Iran, U.S. President Donald Trump appears to be softening his earlier hardline stance. Initially, he had insisted that only Iran’s unconditional surrender would be acceptable, but analysts now observe signs of flexibility in his position. The shift comes as the standoff and blockade in the Strait of Hormuz have disrupted global oil markets, driving up prices and creating economic pressure within the United States.
Although Trump has repeatedly claimed that the U.S. is largely energy independent, rising international oil prices are reportedly affecting the American stock market and broader economy. Diplomatic circles are also discussing the possibility that the U.S. might release some of Iran’s frozen assets as part of a potential settlement. Such a move could be politically uncomfortable for Trump, given his past criticism of the Obama administration’s decision to return Iranian funds during the signing of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
Analysts suggest that any similar step now could appear contradictory to Trump’s earlier political stance, adding complexity to his administration’s approach toward Iran.
