Pakistan has announced a boycott of its upcoming T20 World Cup match against India, sparking widespread debate over the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) neutrality. Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif accused the ICC of double standards and called for the creation of a new international cricket body. His remarks, shared on social media, were echoed by sports analyst and journalist Omar Quraishi, who questioned the ICC’s impartiality and policy consistency.

Quraishi argued that Pakistan’s decision reflects long-standing political realities in international cricket, which he said the ICC itself has allowed to develop. He claimed that past favoritism toward the Indian government by the ICC has contributed to the current situation. According to Quraishi, Pakistan’s participation in the World Cup remains both pragmatic and principled, as it is a multilateral event rather than a bilateral series.

He added that Pakistan’s stance highlights the need for equal application of rules across all teams, asserting that until fairness is ensured, the country’s position remains justified and defensible.

England sealed a comprehensive 3–0 Twenty20 series victory over Sri Lanka after winning the third and final match by 12 runs. Batting first, England posted 128 for nine in their 20 overs, with Sam Curran scoring 58 off 48 balls and Jos Buttler adding 25. In reply, Sri Lanka were bowled out for 116 in 19.3 overs, falling short despite early aggression from Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis. England’s bowlers, led by Jacob Bethell with 4 for 11 and Will Jacks with 3 for 14, ensured the visitors’ clean sweep.

This was the second time Sri Lanka have been whitewashed by England in a three-match T20 series. England had already secured the series after winning the first two matches under the leadership of Harry Brook. Dushmantha Chameera took five wickets for 24 runs for Sri Lanka, but it was not enough to prevent defeat.

Sam Curran was named both Player of the Match and Player of the Series for his all-round performance, highlighting England’s dominance throughout the contest.

Arsenal advanced to the League Cup final after defeating Chelsea 1-0 in the second leg of the semifinal at Emirates Stadium. The decisive goal came in added time from Kai Havertz, securing a 4-2 aggregate victory for Mikel Arteta’s side. The win marks Arsenal’s first appearance in the League Cup final in six years, continuing their strong form across competitions this season.

Chelsea, despite losing the first leg at home, pressed Arsenal for long periods but failed to create enough clear scoring chances. Arsenal’s Piero Hincapié tested Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sánchez early in the match, while Chelsea’s five-man defense limited Arsenal’s attacking rhythm. In the second half, Chelsea introduced Cole Palmer and Estevão in search of an equalizer but could not find the net.

Arsenal maintained control throughout much of the match, and Havertz’s composed finish from Declan Rice’s pass sealed their place in the final, extending the team’s winning momentum in both the Premier League and the League Cup.

The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) has announced a major overhaul of cricket’s laws, introducing 73 amendments in a new edition released on Tuesday. The revised laws will take effect from October 1, 2026. Among the most notable changes, play will no longer stop at the fall of a wicket in the final over of a day in multi-day matches, including Tests. The new batter must immediately take the field if conditions permit. MCC explained that the previous rule gave an unfair advantage to the batting side and reduced the drama of the game.

Other key updates include stricter rules for boundary catches, allowing a fielder jumping from outside the boundary to touch the ball only once before completing the catch inside the field. Laminated bats will now be permitted in adult club cricket to reduce costs, with national boards deciding their level of use. The definitions of hit wicket, overthrow, and dead ball have been clarified, and captains will no longer be allowed to declare in the final innings.

Before implementation, the ICC Cricket Committee will discuss these changes to decide whether to include them in international playing conditions, while domestic adoption will depend on each country’s board.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has expressed opposition to banning Israel from international football competitions, despite ongoing discussions among several European nations advocating such a move in protest of Israel’s actions in Palestine. Speaking about potential changes to FIFA’s rules, Infantino suggested that the organization’s constitution should prevent any country from being excluded due to political leaders’ actions. He emphasized maintaining open channels of connection through sport.

UEFA had earlier prepared to hold a vote on suspending Israel during its executive committee meeting in September, but the discussion was postponed after U.S. President Donald Trump announced a ceasefire proposal between Israel and Hamas. According to The Athletic, later talks focused on the procedural aspects of implementing a ban. Ireland’s Football Association strongly supported a proposal to temporarily suspend Israel from UEFA competitions.

Infantino also argued that the current ban on Russia, imposed after its 2022 invasion of Ukraine, should be lifted, saying it had achieved nothing and only deepened frustration and hatred. He warned that imposing a similar ban on Israel would represent a failure for football diplomacy.

Former Pakistan cricketer Kamran Akmal has sharply criticized the International Cricket Council (ICC) after the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) decided to boycott its T20 World Cup match against India in support of Bangladesh. Speaking on the YouTube channel ‘Game Plan,’ Akmal said the PCB should not back down from its stance, accusing the ICC of double standards for urging Pakistan to reconsider the boycott.

Akmal questioned why the ICC had remained silent when the Asia Cup was held under a hybrid model and when India refused to play the Champions Trophy in Pakistan. He argued that Pakistan’s decision deserved respect, just as Pakistan had respected India’s earlier choices. Akmal also recalled incidents during the Asia Cup when Indian players allegedly refused to shake hands or accept the trophy, calling it disrespectful.

Following Pakistan’s government announcement on social media, the ICC issued a statement saying it had not yet received official communication from the PCB. The ICC urged the board to consider the long-term impact of its decision on national and global cricket and to seek a solution that protects all stakeholders’ interests.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has expressed support for lifting the four-year ban imposed on Russia from international football tournaments. Speaking to Sky Sports, Infantino argued that the sanctions have achieved nothing but created frustration and hatred. He said Russian boys and girls should be allowed to play football across Europe and that no country should be deprived of the sport because of its political leaders’ actions.

Russia’s national and club teams have been suspended from FIFA and UEFA competitions since February 2022, following the invasion of Ukraine. Ukrainian Sports Minister Matvii Bidnyi criticized Infantino’s remarks as irresponsible and childish, saying they detach football from the reality where children are being killed. UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin stated that Russia’s reintegration should only occur after the war in Ukraine ends.

Infantino also supported FIFA’s decision to award a peace prize to U.S. President Donald Trump during the 2026 World Cup draw, saying those who contribute to peace should be recognized.

Pakistan has decided to boycott its scheduled World Cup group-stage match against India on February 15, in protest against the ICC’s role in Bangladesh’s exclusion from the tournament. The decision, announced after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s meeting with Pakistan Cricket Board chief Mohsin Naqvi, has sparked widespread debate about potential financial losses and sanctions.

Analysts have suggested that the cancellation of the India–Pakistan match could cost the ICC billions in revenue, and that Pakistan might face fines or bans from future ICC or Asia Cup events. However, the report indicates that such penalties are unlikely because the boycott was ordered by Pakistan’s government, not its cricket board.

Historical precedents show that when governments directed teams to boycott matches, such as Australia and West Indies in 1996 or New Zealand and England in 2003, the ICC did not impose financial sanctions. Based on these examples, Pakistan is expected to avoid major financial repercussions from its government-led decision.

Former ICC Head of Communications Sami-ul-Hasan Burney has blamed India for the ongoing unrest surrounding the T20 World Cup. He sharply criticized the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for publicly announcing the termination of Bangladeshi pacer Mustafizur Rahman’s contract with Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Burney argued that if the BCCI had handled the matter privately, Bangladesh and Pakistan’s threats to boycott the tournament could have been avoided.

Burney, who also served as media director for the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), said the ICC’s stance on Bangladesh-related issues has disappointed PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, who views it as a “moving the goalposts” policy. Burney warned that Pakistan could face punitive measures, including fines and loss of broadcast revenue, if the ICC enforces disciplinary action. He estimated potential losses of around 250 million US dollars for missing a match, compared to Pakistan’s annual revenue of 35.5 million dollars.

He concluded that India’s public handling of the Mustafizur issue and its perceived double standards are the main causes of the current instability, leaving the cricket world focused on how the ICC’s next steps will affect Pakistan’s future.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s future with Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr has become uncertain after reports of his growing dissatisfaction with the club’s management. Portuguese media outlets, including A Bola and Record, reported that the 40-year-old forward refused to play in a recent league match, citing perceived neglect of Al Nassr compared to other Public Investment Fund-owned clubs such as Al Hilal and Al Ittihad. The reports suggest Ronaldo is contemplating leaving Al Nassr, with potential destinations including Major League Soccer or a return to Europe.

According to Record, Ronaldo believes his contributions to raising the global profile of the Saudi Pro League have not been adequately recognized. His frustration reportedly deepened after Al Hilal signed Karim Benzema, a move he found disappointing. Despite his discontent, Ronaldo remains focused on winning his first Saudi league title and reaching the 1,000-goal milestone in his career.

The reports indicate that Ronaldo could leave Al Nassr as early as June, though his next move remains uncertain. Analysts suggest the coming weeks will be crucial in determining his future.

French forward Karim Benzema has joined Saudi Pro League leaders Al-Hilal on an 18-month free transfer after terminating his contract with Al-Ittihad. The club confirmed the move in an official statement on Monday. Local media reported that Benzema decided to leave after rejecting Al-Ittihad’s offer to extend his contract. His recent absence from two consecutive league matches had fueled speculation about his future.

Benzema enjoyed a successful spell with Jeddah-based Al-Ittihad, leading the team to both the Saudi Pro League title and the King’s Cup last season, marking the club’s first domestic double. The 38-year-old striker joined Al-Ittihad in 2023 after 14 years with Real Madrid. In a message on social media platform X, he expressed pride in representing the club and gratitude for the experience.

This season, Benzema scored 16 goals in 21 appearances across all competitions for Al-Ittihad. Al-Hilal currently tops the league table with 47 points, one point ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr, while Al-Ittihad sits sixth with 34 points.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) faces renewed pressure ahead of the T20 World Cup as political tensions between Pakistan and India intensify. Pakistan’s government has decided that its team will not play against India, and according to Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) officials and former ICC chairman Ehsan Mani, the ICC cannot punish Pakistan for following a government directive. They argue that compliance with state orders cannot be treated as a punishable offense.

Mani recalled that a similar situation occurred when India refused to play in Pakistan during the 2025 Champions Trophy due to its government’s restrictions, and the ICC took no action then. He emphasized that when a cricket board acts under state instruction, applying double standards is unjustified. Mani also criticized the ICC for merely observing such crises instead of finding effective solutions, noting that the PCB’s chairman is also a government minister.

Financially, the India-Pakistan match is the most lucrative fixture of the World Cup, valued at about 615 billion rupees. Sources suggest the ICC may explore alternatives such as adjusting revenue distribution instead of imposing direct sanctions.

ICC faces dilemma as Pakistan skips India match under government order

Pakistan’s government has officially announced that its cricket team will not play the scheduled T20 World Cup match against India on February 15 in Colombo, citing national interest. The team will, however, participate in all other matches of the tournament starting February 7. Former ICC chairman Ehsan Mani said the board cannot be punished for following government orders, recalling that India had refused to play in Pakistan during the 2025 Champions Trophy.

The ICC has expressed concern over Pakistan’s decision, warning that selective participation could lead to disciplinary action. The organization stated that it has not yet received formal communication from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) but emphasized that such a move contradicts the principles of global sporting events. The ICC urged the PCB to consider the long-term impact on both national and international cricket.

If Pakistan skips the match, India will receive a walkover and two points, though the tournament could face significant commercial losses estimated between 200 and 250 crore rupees. The ICC retains the option to impose financial or administrative measures if necessary.
