Cybersecurity firm Malwarebytes reported that personal data of about 17.5 million Instagram users has been leaked and shared on the dark web. The leaked dataset includes usernames, full names, email addresses, phone numbers, partial physical addresses, and other contact details. The breach has raised serious concerns about user privacy and platform security.

According to Malwarebytes, although no passwords were exposed, the leaked information could still be exploited for identity theft or financial fraud. A hacker using the alias 'Solonik' reportedly released the data for free on a dark web forum last week. Following the leak, users from various regions have complained about receiving numerous password reset emails, which analysts believe may be linked to unauthorized login attempts using the exposed email addresses.

Meta, Instagram’s parent company, denied any direct hacking or intrusion into its systems. The company attributed the surge in password reset emails to a technical issue and assured that user accounts remain secure.

The ‘Ami Probashi’ app has introduced a new visa verification service for Bangladeshi migrant workers traveling to Oman, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia. According to a press release issued on Sunday, January 11, 2026, the platform’s operator announced that migrants can now verify their visas before departure by calling the helpline number 16768. The service aims to make the verification process simple and accessible through both the app and the hotline.

The initiative is designed to protect migrant workers from visa-related fraud and ensure safe and transparent migration. After calling the helpline and providing visa details, the ‘Ami Probashi’ team will verify the information. Once verification is complete, an SMS will be sent to the user confirming whether the visa is valid or invalid. If the visa information is not found in the system, users will be advised to contact the relevant embassy.

The service is already operational, offering Bangladeshi workers a reliable way to confirm visa authenticity before traveling to the three Gulf countries.

Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Limited (BTCL) has announced up to threefold increases in internet speeds across all existing packages while keeping monthly prices unchanged. The Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology disclosed the decision in a statement on Sunday, noting that the move aims to ensure improved digital services for customers. BTCL said the initiative will provide more reliable, faster, and higher-quality internet access, supporting the country’s ongoing digital transformation.

According to the new structure, the 5 Mbps ‘Sulav-5’ package priced at 399 taka has been upgraded to a 20 Mbps ‘Sashroyi-20’ package. Similarly, the 12 Mbps ‘Sulav-12’ package at 500 taka now offers 25 Mbps, and the 15 Mbps ‘Campus-15’ package at the same price has been raised to 50 Mbps. Higher-tier packages have also seen significant boosts, with speeds reaching up to 170 Mbps for 1,700 taka.

BTCL stated that the enhanced speeds will play an important role in supporting online education, office work, video streaming, gaming, and other digital services across the country.

RFL Group has introduced its electric scooter brand 'Raido' at the Dhaka International Trade Fair 2026, marking its first appearance with affordable and eco-friendly models. Banglalink, a leading digital operator in Bangladesh, has officially launched its Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWiFi) calling service across the country. The service enables customers to make high-quality voice calls using Wi-Fi networks in addition to mobile networks, ensuring uninterrupted communication even in areas with weak mobile coverage. The nationwide rollout follows a successful trial phase conducted in Dhaka, Chattogram, and Khulna, where user feedback helped refine the service.

According to Banglalink’s Chief Corporate and Regulatory Affairs Officer Taimur Rahman, the VoWiFi technology will bridge connectivity gaps and deliver clear, high-quality voice calls regardless of location or infrastructure. The system automatically routes calls through Wi-Fi when mobile signals are weak, without requiring additional apps or authentication. The initiative was made possible through collaboration among mobile operators, regulators, ISPs, and technology partners.

Currently, the service is available on selected handset models and through specific ISP partners as per regulatory guidelines. Banglalink is working with device manufacturers and ISPs to expand access, positioning VoWiFi as a complement to its LTE network and a step toward strengthening Bangladesh’s digital transformation.

The Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology announced that the ICT Division has published its white paper on the official website ictd.gov.bd. The document was prepared by a task force formed on 3 April 2025 with the approval of the Chief Adviser to investigate irregularities and mismanagement in ICT-related initiatives during the previous government. After a long process of inquiry and review, the task force submitted the finalized white paper, which has now been made public.

According to the ministry’s statement, the white paper presents a detailed account of irregularities, corruption, administrative weaknesses, and structural problems observed in the ICT Division’s activities over the past fifteen years. It also includes a set of recommendations aimed at ensuring transparency, accountability, and good governance in future operations.

The government expects the white paper to serve as a key guideline for institutional reform within the ICT Division, helping to prevent corruption and improve citizen-oriented services.

The Bangladesh government is awaiting an assessment report from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) experts before proceeding with the Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Limited (BTCL) 5G network expansion project. Officials said technical testing is nearing completion, with about 50 percent of the work already done. The project, launched in 2022, aims to build a strong backbone network to meet national bandwidth demand through 2030.

Once completed, the project will establish high-capacity optical fiber networks across Bangladesh, significantly enhancing digital infrastructure and enabling BTCL to supply about 30 percent of the country’s total internet bandwidth. The Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority (DTCA) has introduced a new mobile application to make the use of Metro Rail’s Rapid Pass and MRT Pass cards more convenient. According to an announcement issued on Saturday, users can now recharge their cards directly through the Rapid Pass app. Initially, some features may face temporary issues as the app is newly launched, but DTCA’s technical team is working continuously to improve performance and ensure a smoother user experience.

Registered users of the rapidpass.com.bd website can log in to the app using their existing user ID and password. After logging in, they can recharge amounts ranging from 100 to 5,000 taka using bank cards, as well as mobile financial services such as bKash and Nagad. The app is available for download on Android devices by searching “Rapid Pass” in the app store or through the provided Google Play link.

DTCA stated that the initiative aims to enhance passenger convenience and streamline the metro card recharge process through digital means.

Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) has launched a pilot program for its newly developed three-wheeled, low-speed, battery-powered eco-friendly electric rickshaw in Dhaka. The program was inaugurated on Sunday morning through separate events in Aftabnagar under Dhaka North City Corporation and Jigatola under Dhaka South City Corporation. The pilot allows controlled trial operations on designated roads in Aftabnagar, Dhanmondi, and Motijheel areas.

Government advisers and city administrators attended the inauguration, emphasizing scientific testing of design, braking systems, and battery safety. The initiative aims to regulate unapproved battery-fitted rickshaws and establish an orderly urban transport system. The new model features improved braking, speed control, and a 38-volt lithium battery capable of running 70–80 kilometers per charge. Geo-fencing technology will restrict movement outside designated zones, and only trained, licensed drivers will be allowed to operate the vehicles.

Officials said the pilot’s findings will guide future expansion across Dhaka and gradual conversion of existing pedal rickshaws into safer, modern electric versions.

Elon Musk’s satellite internet company Starlink has announced that people in Venezuela will be able to use its internet service free of charge until February 3. The company made the announcement through a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, stating that the initiative aims to ensure uninterrupted connectivity for Venezuelan citizens during the current situation.

According to the BBC, the decision follows a recent large-scale U.S. military operation in Venezuela, during which President Nicolás Maduro and his wife were detained and taken to New York. In response to these developments, Starlink said it would provide free access to its high-speed satellite internet service to support communication across the country.

The free service is intended to remain active until early February, allowing Venezuelans to stay connected without cost during a period of political and military upheaval.

After the launch of the National Equipment Identity Register (NEIR), alarming data has emerged about the prevalence of cloned and counterfeit mobile phones in Bangladesh. According to Fayez Ahmad Tayyeb, Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser for the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology, millions of fake and duplicate IMEI numbers are currently active on national mobile networks. In a verified Facebook post on Friday night, he cited examples such as “1111111111111”, “0000000000000”, and “9999999999999”, noting that these IMEIs are not being blocked at present.

Tayyeb stated that millions of people are using low-quality counterfeit phones that have never undergone radiation or safety testing, including Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) checks. These devices are active across all four mobile operators. Instead of immediate disconnection, they will be tagged as “grey” devices. He added that over the past decade, one IMEI number alone was linked to 39,122,534 different combinations of document IDs, MSISDNs, and IMEIs. Operators currently cannot distinguish between phones, SIM-connected devices, and IoT devices, though tagging of legally imported IoT devices has begun.

Bangladesh’s government has confirmed that no illegal or cloned mobile phones will be deactivated within the next 90 days following the official launch of the National Equipment Identity Register (NEIR) on January 1. The clarification came from Faez Ahmad Tayyeb, Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser for the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology, who addressed public confusion over multiple phone registrations under single national IDs.

Tayyeb explained that the NEIR system, which links all mobile devices’ IMEI numbers to a national database, received over three billion data sets from operators, including historical records. This caused some users’ national IDs to show an unusually high number of active devices. The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) and mobile operators are jointly working to archive old data and display only currently active handsets. He also noted that the system had been initially developed in 2021 and recently upgraded with additional features.

According to the government, the NEIR will help identify stolen and illegal phones, raise public awareness, and allow citizens to monitor SIM and device usage linked to their national IDs, enhancing transparency and security in mobile communications.

South Korean automaker Hyundai has unveiled its new electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, the Supernal S-A2, at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in the United States. The aircraft is designed for short-distance passenger transport within cities, capable of vertical takeoff and landing like a helicopter and forward flight like an airplane. It can fly up to 1,500 feet high at a maximum speed of 120 miles per hour and cover 25 to 40 miles on a single charge. The interim government of Bangladesh is facing widespread protests and multiple challenges over the implementation of the National Equipment Identity Registrar (NEIR). Around 20,000 mobile phone traders across the country, including in Dhaka, have taken to the streets opposing the initiative. The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) announced that from tomorrow, unregistered or illegally imported mobile phones will no longer function in the country. The government argues that NEIR will curb illegal handset trade, reduce crime, and restore order in the mobile market.

Opposing traders claim that the system will strengthen a syndicate of 18 importers and put small businesses at risk, potentially rendering about five million phones illegal. The mobile industry currently employs about 160,000 people and contributes over Tk 2,000 crore in annual tax revenue. In response to concerns, a joint meeting of NBR, the Commerce Ministry, the Telecom Division, and BTRC decided to lower import duties and begin registering unlisted traders.
