Teachers of Dhaka University have called on the government to grant the institution "special status" in recognition of its historic and significant contributions to Bangladesh’s politics, society, economy, and education. On Sunday afternoon, a memorandum signed by faculty members from 83 departments was submitted to Vice Chancellor Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan. White Panel Convener Dr. Morshed Hasan Khan stated, “Despite its pivotal role, DU holds no special status. Globally, institutions of national importance are often given such recognition. We urge the government to do the same.”

In a week-long crackdown, Saudi authorities detained more than 12,100 foreign nationals for violating housing, labor, and border regulations. The arrests were made between May 22 and May 28 as part of an ongoing initiative to enforce residency and employment laws. According to Arabian Business, 63% of the detainees were Ethiopian, 34% Yemeni, and 3% of other nationalities. Additionally, 90 individuals were arrested while attempting to illegally exit the country.

Three top leaders of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement (BAISHA) in Barishal have resigned, accusing the organization of deviating from its core principles. The resigning members include chief organizer Hasibul Islam Turan, joint convener Touhidul Islam Abid, and member Tahasin Ahmed Ratul. They claimed that BAISHA has transformed into an anti-public platform that contradicts the ideals of the July uprising. They also alleged that many Barishal district leaders are engaged in misconduct, and about 50% of BAISHA activists are affiliated with other political parties.

Syed Hossain, an accused in a case involving violence and explosives during a public uprising in Charramba Union of Lohagara, Chattogram, has been appointed as the Panel Chairman. Allegations suggest that he concealed vital information and paid a hefty sum to secure the post. In the controversial 2022 Union Parishad election, Helal Uddin, the local Weavers' League president, allegedly seized polling centers through violence to become chairman. After Helal fled post-August 5, Panel Chairman Mohammad Mia served in his place. Unexpectedly, he was removed, and the district administration declared Syed Hossain the new chairman.

Continuous heavy rainfall and upstream mountain streams from India’s Tripura state have caused severe flooding in low-lying border areas of Akhaura upazila in Brahmanbaria. The floodwaters have submerged parts of Mogra, Moniond, and Dakshin unions.
Local authorities have initiated emergency response measures. Waterlogging has also affected key installations such as the Akhaura International Immigration Checkpost and the Customs House.

Chowdhury Ashiq Mahmood, Chairman of the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA), has expressed optimism over investment prospects as a large delegation of Chinese business leaders is currently visiting Bangladesh. This initiative coincides with the government’s ongoing work to establish a dedicated Chinese Economic Zone in the country.
The Chinese delegation, led by Commerce Minister Wang Wentao, arrived in Dhaka on Saturday for a three-day visit, comprising nearly 250 investors and entrepreneurs from 143 companies. Mahmood noted that the recent Investment and Trade Conference saw robust participation from both Chinese and Bangladeshi investors.
He also confirmed that BEZA has signed a bilateral Memorandum of Understanding with China for cooperation in the power sector, and another MoU has been signed for an agriculture-based project in Chandpur.

Three separate cases have been filed at Nagarkanda Police Station in connection with the recent attack on 18-year-old Baishakhi Islam Barsha, a prominent anti-discrimination activist in Faridpur. Barsha herself filed two of the cases, while police lodged the third over obstruction of law enforcement duties during the incident. Authorities have arrested six individuals so far. Following the incident, the officer-in-charge (OC) of the local police station was withdrawn by the district police administration.

A total of 105 foreign nationals, including several Bangladeshis, were deported from Kuala Lumpur International Airport by Malaysia’s Aviation Security (AVSEC) for failing to meet essential entry conditions. In an official statement, authorities said they identified deceptive tactics used by these individuals during an operation. The passengers were found to be using Malaysia as a transit point en route to third countries. Authorities have ordered their return to their home countries.

Press Secretary Shafiqur Alam revealed that Japan is planning significant investment in the Matarbari project. Discussions also included sending 100,000 Bangladeshi workers to Japan each year. Japan’s main investment agency, JETRO, responded positively, and progress was made toward resolving visa-related complications. A substantial portion of the $29 million master plan will be funded by Japan.

The National Consensus Commission is set to begin its second round of dialogue with political parties on Monday at 4:30 PM. The discussion will be inaugurated by Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus at the Foreign Service Academy. Deputy Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad Mazumdar said that all parties involved in the reform process have been invited and expressed hope that this dialogue would help finalize the July Charter.

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has launched a probe into alleged irregularities in the recruitment process and embezzlement of Tk 150 crore at the mobile financial service ‘Nagad.’ Following a raid at the company’s head office, the ACC stated that Faiz Ahmad Tayyab’s personal aide Atik Morshed and his wife Zakia Sultana Jui may be interrogated. Authorities have also requested necessary documents to verify the allegations.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has arrested three activists from the Awami League and Jubo League over a sudden flash procession in front of Delta Hospital in the capital's Dholaipar area. The arrested include Khorhshed-ur-Rahman Masum (48), Joint General Secretary of Shyampur AL, Ahsan Kabir Ador (31) and Idris Ali Ishan (22), both members of Kadamtoli Jubo League. A case has been filed at Shyampur Police Station, and efforts are ongoing to apprehend others involved.
