BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir met with Australian High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Susan Ryle, for a one-hour meeting at the BNP Chairperson’s office in Gulshan. Hundreds of BNP leaders and activists, along with affiliated groups, marched in Pekua on Thursday demanding the death penalty for former MP and Chakaria Upazila Awami League President Jafar Alam. The rally started at 10 AM from Pekua Chowmuhani and ended with a gathering at the same location. Upazila BNP President M. Bahadur Shah led the protest, calling for maximum punishment for Jafar Alam. Sarzis Alam, a leader of the Nationalist Citizen’s Party (NCP), has alleged that extortion is being carried out in the name of the BNP in Lalmonirhat’s Patgram area. Trucks transporting sand and stone from government-approved sites are reportedly being stopped and forced to pay bribes ranging from BDT 500 to 1,000. When two extortionists were jailed for a month, over a hundred activists from BNP and its volunteer wing reportedly stormed the police station and freed them. Sarzis questioned whether BNP leadership, tagged in his Facebook post, would take any action against these incidents.
