Bangladeshi army personnel have rescued five businessmen who were held captive and tortured in a makeshift torture cell at a student hostel in Sajiara village, within Magura’s municipal area. The captors were demanding a ransom of 1 million taka. One suspect, identified as Ishtiaq Ahmed Shanto—reportedly the nephew of a BNP leader—has been detained. Sources say Shanto lured the businessmen to the location on Tuesday evening and held them hostage. When they said they couldn’t afford the ransom, he, along with 7–8 accomplices, allegedly tortured them throughout Tuesday night and intermittently on Wednesday.

Two leaders—a BNP convenor and a student activist from the Anti-Discrimination Movement—were released on bail a day after being arrested for allegedly extorting money at the Kurigram’s Jatrapur market without official lease documents. BNP leader Mahabubur Rahman and activist Alomgir Hossain were detained by army personnel. Reports indicate they attempted to collect tolls without prior approval or official paperwork, prompting their arrest after complaints.

Two leaders from the Dhaka University branch of the Bangladesh Islami Chhatri Sangstha submitted a memorandum to the Vice-Chancellor demanding improved safety, housing, healthcare, and other essential services for female students. The delegation, led by President Sabikun Nahar Tamanna and Secretary Afsana Akter, met the VC to voice their concerns. Tamanna noted that their organization had been unable to operate on campus due to state repression, but they are now rebuilding their structure following central directives issued after August 5.

Chhatra Jote held a protest in Chattogram against the acquittal of ATM Azhar in a war crimes case. During Wednesday afternoon’s demonstration, six were injured in an alleged attack by Islami Chhatra Shibir. Mahmudur Rahman Manna, President of Nagorik Oikya, stated that Bangladeshis want free and fair local government elections and warned against power vacuums at the grassroots. Criticizing local political leaders for engaging in extortion and land grabbing, Manna said if politics can run without extortion in Europe and America, it can in Bangladesh too. Regarding the current situation in Myanmar's Rakhine State, he warned that the absence of authority and the creation of a humanitarian corridor could lead to instability. He urged the government to remain vigilant about ongoing protest movements and to respect legitimate public demands.

BNP leader Dr. Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain accused the government of plotting both domestically and internationally to delay the upcoming general election. Speaking at a Nayapaltan rally, he said the current regime has already served ten months but has taken no meaningful steps to restore voting rights and democracy. “If the election is delayed further, we will confront this conspiracy with the power of our youth,” he declared, calling for prompt electoral reforms and an election before December.

BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman stated during a rally at Nayapaltan that a national election must be held by December to reflect the people's will through a representative government. He warned that discussions of minor and major reforms are being used to delay the election. "People are beginning to suspect that certain elements inside and outside the government have ulterior motives behind these delays," he said.

At a street rally in Biral upazila, political figure Sargis Alam criticized the longstanding inequality in development funding between northern and southern Bangladesh. He claimed that individual municipalities in the south received more funding than entire districts in the north. "The budget allocated for one expressway in the south exceeds what the entire Rangpur Division receives," Sargis stated. He emphasized the need to identify and resolve the region’s challenges through engagement with ministry advisors and urged future leaders to prioritize public needs and adopt a politics of problem-solving.

BNP leader Abdul Moin Khan warned at a Nayapaltan rally that the interim government could not escape a youth-led uprising unless power is transferred through fair elections. He praised the youth's leadership under Tarique Rahman, highlighting their role in confronting authoritarian rule. “We’ve already achieved the first phase of victory in July and August,” he said. Moin Khan called for an immediate and clear election roadmap to restore democracy, insisting that only an elected government can hold legitimate power.

Speaking at a BNP rally in Nayapaltan, Mirza Abbas questioned the motives behind the introduction of Starlink internet in Bangladesh. “We were doing fine without Wi-Fi or Starlink. So, who is it really for? It’s for the Arakan Army,” he alleged. Abbas also raised concerns about strategic locations like the St. Martin’s Island being handed over to foreigners. He claimed the current government functions like a colonial administration, asserting that many in power are not true citizens of the country.

At a rally in Nayapaltan, BNP leader Salahuddin Ahmed clarified that the party had only demanded a roadmap for elections in December, not the resignation of any officials. “The people of Bangladesh have witnessed a theatrical resignation,” he said. He warned that speaking for democratic rights must not be criminalized. A lawyer named Md. Jasim Uddin has filed a contempt of court complaint against NCP leader Sarjis Alam for a Facebook post criticizing the High Court. The post followed the dismissal of a writ petition that sought to block Ishraq Hossain from taking his mayoral oath. Alam wrote, “If mob pressure can influence High Court verdicts, what’s the point of having a High Court?” The lawyer claims this constitutes contempt of court, especially after receiving no reply to a prior legal notice.
