Jahangirnagar University authorities have expelled two female students for two years on charges of possessing and consuming drugs in a dormitory room. The decision was made following a syndicate meeting held early Tuesday, June 16, 2026. The expelled students are Tanuja Tithi from the Department of Management Studies (51st batch) and Sanjida Amir Inisi from the Department of Drama and Dramatics (48th batch). Both have also been permanently expelled from their residential hall, Nawab Faizunnesa Hall, and a case under state law has been recommended against Tithi.

The investigation followed an April 18 raid by hall authorities in room 116 of Nawab Faizunnesa Hall, where drugs were recovered.

The disciplinary board’s decision underscores the university’s zero-tolerance policy toward drug-related offenses within its premises.

On June 16, 2026, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Mia Golam Porwar issued a statement marking the country’s ‘Press Black Day’. He said that if Jamaat were given the opportunity to form a government, it would work tirelessly to uphold freedom of speech, enhance the quality of newspapers, and protect the interests of journalists.

Porwar recalled that on February 24, 1975, the then government established a one-party system through BAKSAL, leading to the closure of all newspapers except four under state control on June 16 that year. He described this as a dark day in Bangladesh’s history, when thousands of journalists lost their jobs. He also criticized the Awami League government led by Sheikh Hasina for continuing media repression since 2009, including the closure of several media outlets and the enactment of restrictive laws.

He welcomed the interim government’s recent decision to repeal controversial sections of the Cyber Security Act 2023 and to allow the reopening of previously closed media houses, calling it a positive step for press freedom.

The proposed Finance Bill 2026 in Bangladesh seeks to exempt listed banks, insurance, and non-bank financial institutions from the obligation to distribute 30 percent of their income as dividends. The bill, presented in the National Parliament, introduces amendments to Section 22 of the Income Tax Act 2023, allowing these institutions to transfer post-tax profits to retained earnings or reserves without paying the current 10 percent tax on such transfers.

The Bangladesh Bank recently restricted dividend payments by banks with less than Tk 2,000 crore in paid-up capital to strengthen their financial base. The new proposal extends dividend distribution relief to other financial institutions as well. For general listed companies, the bill revises the tax calculation method, imposing a 10 percent tax only on the portion of profit transferred to reserves exceeding the 70 percent limit, instead of taxing the entire amount.

Tax expert Snehashish Barua noted that the changes would significantly reduce the tax burden on companies, lower business costs, and encourage reinvestment, while allowing financial institutions to reinforce their capital structures.
