The airport, located on the island’s western coast, is under the control of the Republic of Cyprus and lies about 60 kilometers from Britain’s Royal Air Force (RAF) Akrotiri base.

The evacuation followed a drone attack the previous night targeting the Akrotiri base. Around midday local time on Monday, sirens were heard at the British base and fighter jets were seen taking off.
