Recently released correspondence from the Epstein Files has revealed that convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein exchanged messages with several individuals in the days following the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi in Istanbul. Among the three million documents published on Friday evening were conversations between Epstein and a man named Anas Al Rashid. In one message dated October 12, 2018, Al Rashid described the killing as 'ugly... very ugly,' to which Epstein replied that he suspected something larger was at play, referencing UAE ruler Mohammed bin Zayed. Al Rashid cautioned that information leaks were spreading quickly and that the situation had become a media battle.

Another email in the files shows Epstein claiming that a second source told him one of the operatives recorded video footage on a phone that was later hacked to retrieve the material, though the hacker’s identity was not disclosed. On October 13, Epstein also questioned whether Khashoggi might be labeled a terrorist. A separate FBI memorandum included in the release alleged that Epstein had worked with U.S. and Israeli intelligence agencies and maintained close ties with former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak.

Meta is developing a new Instagram feature that would let users remove themselves from someone else’s Close Friends list. The company told TechCrunch that the feature remains in an early testing phase and is not yet available to general users. Reverse engineer Alessandro Paluzzi first revealed the change after analyzing app code and sharing screenshots showing that users who leave a Close Friends list will no longer see related stories or content unless re-added.

The Close Friends feature, introduced in 2018, allows users to share stories, reels, or posts with a selected group. Until now, there was no option to voluntarily exit another person’s list. The new control could be welcomed by users seeking more privacy, though some may find it awkward if friends notice their departure. Snapchat already offers a similar option, leaving Instagram comparatively behind in this area.

Meta is also testing subscription-based features across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. While details remain undisclosed, early indications suggest premium tools could include expanded audience lists and enhanced privacy controls. Meta emphasized that core experiences will stay free, with subscriptions aimed at users seeking extra control and features.

Several US allies, including the United Kingdom and Canada, are strengthening ties with China amid ongoing trade tensions triggered by US President Donald Trump’s tariff measures last year. Beijing has threatened countries supporting Washington’s trade restrictions and limited global rare earth supplies, a move analysts describe as a risky gamble by President Xi Jinping. Instead of easing the strain on US allies, China’s actions have deepened their economic challenges, pushing them closer to Beijing.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is currently visiting China, marking the first such trip by a UK leader since 2018. His visit aims to secure a bilateral trade deal and discuss sensitive issues, including the detention of Hong Kong activist and British citizen Jimmy Lai. Critics accuse Starmer of being too accommodating toward Beijing, citing his approval of a large Chinese embassy in London. Similarly, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has visited Beijing, calling for a “strategic new partnership” despite past election interference allegations.

Analysts suggest Beijing’s approach is yielding results, as more Western partners seek economic engagement with China while reassessing their dependence on Washington.

U.S. President Donald Trump has claimed that India has signed an agreement to purchase oil from Venezuela instead of Iran. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Saturday, Trump said the deal had already been made. However, there was no immediate response from New Delhi regarding the claim, according to NDTV.

Trump had earlier imposed a 25 percent tariff in March 2025 on countries, including India, that buy Venezuelan oil, and also introduced additional tariffs on Indian imports of Russian oil. He further asserted that U.S. forces took control of Venezuelan oil after the January 3 abduction of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife by the U.S. Delta Force. Bloomberg reported that in January, 18 tankers carrying Venezuelan crude were sent to refineries in Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi, marking the highest volume since December 2024.

Following the alleged abduction, Venezuelan oil exports to China dropped from 400,000 barrels per day to zero, while shipments to the U.S. rose to about 275,000 barrels daily, double the previous month’s level.

The United Nations is facing a deep financial crisis that could bring its operations to a standstill, Secretary-General António Guterres warned in a letter to member states. He urged countries to clear their outstanding dues and implement structural reforms to prevent a severe breakdown. UN spokesperson Farhan Haq said the organization currently lacks the liquidity to continue normal operations and called for immediate payments from member states.

According to official data, by the end of 2025, member states owed the UN a record 1.57 billion dollars. While no specific country was named, the ongoing global geopolitical situation was cited as a major factor. Analysts linked the crisis to U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to cut funding to several UN agencies and pursue alternative international initiatives. Human rights experts warned that such reluctance from major powers could weaken global efforts to uphold international law and human rights.

Guterres also criticized the rule requiring the return of unused funds each year, calling it unrealistic under current conditions. Only 36 of the 193 member states have paid their full 2026 dues, raising serious uncertainty about the UN’s financial future.

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has called on the United Nations to ensure Palestine’s full membership and to take urgent measures to uphold international law and accountability amid ongoing ceasefire violations in Gaza. The appeal was made in a statement to the UN Security Council, as reported by TRT World.

Turkey’s UN envoy Ahmet Yildiz, speaking on behalf of the OIC, said the October 2025 ceasefire agreement between Israel and the Palestinian resistance group Hamas marked a significant step toward peace but warned that its implementation remains at risk. He noted that while the truce has reduced violence and increased humanitarian aid, repeated Israeli attacks and continued blockades are obstructing the delivery of life-saving supplies to Palestinians.

Yildiz praised international efforts to maintain the ceasefire, including those of U.S. President Trump, but stressed that Israeli actions continue to hinder peace progress in Gaza. He also drew attention to Israel’s ongoing aggression in Gaza and the occupied West Bank, including violations of the historical and legal status of Jerusalem’s holy sites.

Senior sports journalist and author Sharada Ugra has alleged that the International Cricket Council (ICC) operates under the influence of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Speaking on The Wire’s program ‘The Interview,’ she claimed that the ICC has effectively become BCCI’s Dubai office, following its directives without question. Her remarks come amid escalating tensions involving Bangladesh, India, and the ICC ahead of the upcoming T20 World Cup, as Bangladesh’s request to shift match venues over security concerns was rejected.

The controversy began when Bangladeshi pacer Mustafizur Rahman was reportedly dropped from the Indian Premier League under what Ugra described as “unwritten, unofficial instructions.” She argued that the move was politically motivated, linked to strained India-Bangladesh relations and upcoming elections in Assam and West Bengal. Ugra criticized the ICC’s refusal to relocate Bangladesh’s matches to Sri Lanka, calling it double standards compared to the hybrid model allowed for India-Pakistan fixtures.

According to Ugra, India’s dominance has undermined the credibility of the World Cup and turned cricket into a political tool. She warned that ICC’s perceived bias could damage its global reputation and raise governance questions as cricket seeks inclusion in the Olympics.

Former ICC president Ehsan Mani has criticized the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) after Bangladesh was excluded from the upcoming T20 World Cup. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) had requested to play its matches in Sri Lanka citing security concerns about traveling to India, but the ICC rejected the proposal and replaced Bangladesh with Scotland. The decision, reportedly influenced by India, has sparked widespread criticism across the cricket world, including within India itself.

In an interview with Telecom Asia, Mani said cricket has lost direction under the ICC’s current structure and called for immediate constitutional reforms to ensure independent and neutral board directors. He blamed political interference and administrative weakness for the current instability. Mani also questioned BCCI’s handling of player safety, citing Mustafizur Rahman’s exclusion from the IPL as an example, and described Bangladesh’s security concerns as legitimate.

He further argued that the ICC should follow FIFA or Olympic models, requiring host nations to guarantee visas and security for all teams or lose hosting rights.

The United States has released two Russian crew members who were detained after their tanker was seized in the North Atlantic Ocean earlier this month. According to Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova, the sailors have been freed and are returning home to Russia. However, the fate of the remaining crew members aboard the vessel remains unclear.

U.S. authorities had detained the Russian-flagged tanker, alleging it was part of a 'shadow fleet' transporting oil from countries such as Venezuela, Russia, and Iran in violation of U.S. sanctions. Washington has indicated that legal action could be taken against the crew, while Moscow has condemned such a move as unacceptable, accusing the U.S. of escalating tensions and endangering international maritime navigation.

Earlier reports stated that the tanker was intercepted near Venezuela’s coast while under Russian naval escort. To prevent U.S. seizure during its operations against Venezuela, the vessel was reportedly reflagged and renamed under Russian jurisdiction.

An Oxford University study published in the British journal Nature Sustainability warns that nearly half of the world’s population could suffer from extreme heat by 2050 if fossil fuel use continues at the current rate. The research, based on a projected two-degree Celsius rise in global temperature from pre-industrial levels, found that 41 percent of people—about 3.79 billion—would be exposed to dangerous heat, up from 23 percent in 2010.

The study, led by Dr. Jesus Lizana of Oxford’s Department of Engineering Science, highlights a sharp contrast between national temperature averages and actual living conditions. It identifies India, Nigeria, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and the Philippines as particularly vulnerable to severe heat exposure. The findings also show that regions with high population density will experience over 3,000 cooling degree days, indicating a growing demand for air conditioning and other cooling systems.

Researchers noted that extreme cold conditions will decline globally, with the share of “severely cold” populations dropping from 14 percent to 7 percent. This shift will increase cooling needs in tropical countries while reducing heating requirements in northern nations such as Canada and Russia.

Pakistan’s legendary cricketer Mohammad Yousuf has strongly criticized the International Cricket Council (ICC) after Bangladesh was excluded from the upcoming T20 World Cup. According to the report, Bangladesh had made a justified request to change the tournament venue, but the ICC, allegedly influenced by India, pressured Bangladesh and ultimately removed the team from the competition. The decision has sparked widespread criticism across the cricket world.

In a post on his X handle, Yousuf questioned the ICC’s fairness, consistency, and administrative competence, saying the organization failed to ensure justice for Bangladesh. He compared Bangladesh’s massive fan base to that of ten other cricketing nations combined, arguing that ignoring Bangladesh’s legitimate security concerns raises serious doubts about ICC’s integrity. Yousuf emphasized that cricket should be governed by principles, not favoritism.

The report adds that Scotland has replaced Bangladesh in the tournament and will play in Group C alongside Pakistan, Zimbabwe, and England.

The United States has sharply criticized the European Union over its long-awaited free trade agreement with India, accusing Europe of indirectly financing the Russia–Ukraine war. Senior economic officials in the Trump administration claimed that by purchasing refined Russian oil from India, Europe is unintentionally supporting Moscow’s war efforts. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that although Europe has restricted direct oil trade with Russia, its imports of refined oil from India amount to indirect funding of the conflict.

Bessent described Europe’s approach as unbalanced compared to Washington’s tougher stance. He noted that the US has imposed a 50 percent tariff on India as a punitive measure while Europe continues to benefit by buying refined oil. His comments came as India and the EU prepared to formally announce the trade deal after nearly 14 years of negotiations. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has called the agreement “the mother of all trade deals.”

The announcement adds a new dimension to global trade amid existing tensions driven by US tariff policies and the ongoing Russia–Ukraine war.
