Researchers at the University of Cambridge have developed a new vaccine technology using artificial intelligence that could provide immunity against entire families of viruses. The team, led by Professor Jonathan Heeney, compared the approach to a 'master key' capable of unlocking protection against multiple virus variants. The technology aims to overcome the limitations of current vaccines, which target specific past strains and often fail to protect against new variants.

Heeney began developing the project after working in West Africa during the 2013–2016 Ebola outbreak, which caused over 11,300 deaths. Using early AI tools, his team analyzed extensive viral data to identify common and differing components that trigger immune responses, enabling broader protection. The AI-assisted universal Sarbeco coronavirus vaccine was tested on 39 volunteers under Southampton University Hospital supervision, with no significant safety concerns reported. Results were published in the Journal of Infection.

The vaccine, developed jointly by Cambridge scientists and biotechnology firm DIOSynVax, is now moving toward larger-scale trials. Heeney said the technology could help prevent future pandemics and represents a major conceptual shift in vaccine design.

A new survey by think tank More in Common, shared with The Guardian, shows that three out of every five Britons aged 18 to 28 would vote to rejoin the European Union if given the chance. The poll of 440 young people found that 60 percent support returning to the EU, while only 9 percent prefer staying outside. Among those likely to vote in a potential second referendum, support for rejoining rises to 81 percent. The survey also reveals that half of Generation Z respondents believe Brexit has failed, with only 16 percent calling it a success.

More in Common’s executive director Luke Tryl said Brexit was a formative political event for many young Britons who were too young to vote in 2016 but remember the campaigns and debates vividly. He noted that while most young people see Brexit as a failure, many blame political mismanagement rather than the idea itself. The survey indicates that young Britons’ main concerns now include living costs, affordable housing, jobs, and climate change.

Analysts cited in the report suggest that demographic changes since 2016, including the replacement of older pro-Brexit voters with younger pro-EU ones, may have reduced the Brexit majority.

A report by The Atlantic, cited by Amar Desh on June 24, 2026, describes how Ukrainian women, known locally as 'Vidma' or 'witches', are playing a key role in resistance operations against Russian forces in occupied territories. These women gather intelligence, often through covert online interactions, and pass it to Ukrainian military units for precision drone strikes. One example involved a Russian soldier deceived by a fake online persona operated by a Ukrainian intelligence officer, leading to a successful drone attack on his base.

The report notes that Ukraine’s resistance tactics have evolved over four years of war, focusing on collecting small pieces of information to identify military targets. Former MP Lesia Orobets said Ukrainian society respects the 'Vidma' for their skills, while resistance organizer Petro Andriushchenko emphasized women’s ability to access areas men cannot. The Ukrainian Women’s Guard has trained over 60,000 women in self-defense and resistance since 2014.

According to the report, intelligence gathered from occupied zones enables rapid drone operations, sometimes within minutes of target identification. However, the publication cautions that independent verification of such wartime claims remains difficult.

Ten years after the 2016 referendum in which 52 percent of Britons voted to leave the European Union, the United Kingdom continues to grapple with political instability and economic slowdown. Since the vote, the country has seen six prime ministers, with a seventh expected soon. The latest, Keir Starmer, announced his resignation after two years in office, citing a sluggish economy and a divided electorate. Analysts and academics describe Brexit’s lingering influence as an “underground imprint” that still shapes British politics.

Economists say Brexit has damaged the UK economy, reducing exports to the EU by about 12 percent and imports by 16 percent. Businesses face new trade barriers, paperwork, and border checks despite a zero-tariff agreement. Political divisions have deepened within major parties, and voter disillusionment has grown, pushing many toward smaller parties such as the Green Party and Reform UK. Public opinion polls now show a majority favoring rejoining the EU.

Experts warn that unless British leaders confront Brexit’s legacy, the country will remain in a state of prolonged crisis, with its political and economic vitality steadily eroding.

A decade after Brexit, UK struggles with political instability and economic slowdown

On June 23, 2026, the United Kingdom marked ten years since the Brexit referendum that took it out of the European Union. The political fallout continues as Labour Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced his resignation after two years in office, citing a sluggish economy, government inefficiency, and voter fatigue—issues linked to Brexit’s lingering effects. The country is now preparing for its seventh prime minister since the 2016 vote.

The 2016 referendum, called by then-Conservative leader David Cameron, split the nation 52–48 in favor of leaving the EU. Successive leaders, including Theresa May, Boris Johnson, Liz Truss, and Rishi Sunak, struggled to manage the consequences of the separation. Analysts say Brexit’s promises of control over laws, borders, and spending quickly collided with economic and political realities, leaving Britain divided and disillusioned.

Public regret over Brexit is growing, with recent polls showing a majority now favor rejoining the EU. Yet politicians remain wary of reopening the debate, as the country faces economic stagnation, rising political cynicism, and sporadic anti-immigrant unrest rooted in the unresolved legacy of Brexit.

Ten years after Brexit, UK faces turmoil as Keir Starmer resigns and politics remain fractured

Former UK Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn has reintroduced a bill in the House of Commons demanding an independent public inquiry into what he described as Britain's involvement in genocide. The move came shortly after Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced his resignation. Corbyn criticized Starmer, saying that although he was stepping down, the government's role in what Corbyn called one of the greatest crimes of the time should not be forgotten.

Corbyn had first introduced the bill last year, seeking an investigation into the UK's alleged participation in Israel’s military operations in Gaza. The proposed inquiry covered issues such as arms supplies to Israel, the use of British intelligence aircraft, and the use of Royal Air Force bases. Starmer’s government had rejected the bill during its second reading.

Following that rejection, Corbyn organized a two-day tribunal on Gaza, where testimonies were heard from Palestinian civilians, doctors, aid workers, and legal experts, according to the report sourced from Al Jazeera.

Jeremy Corbyn renews push for inquiry into UK’s alleged role in Gaza genocide

UK Prime Minister and Labour Party leader Sir Keir Starmer has resigned less than two years after his landslide election victory. His departure is widely linked to his government's stance on Israel’s military operations in Gaza and the United Kingdom’s continued support for Israel. Local elections and opinion polls indicated that many former Labour voters turned away from the party over its Gaza policy, shifting support to centrist or left-leaning alternatives.

Former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn and Green Party leader Zack Polanski sharply criticized Starmer’s approach, accusing him of moral failure and complicity in atrocities. During his tenure, Starmer maintained intelligence and military cooperation with Israel, authorized arms exports, and faced allegations of ignoring evidence of war crimes. His government also banned the pro-Palestinian group “Palestine Action” and restricted entry to critics of Israel, while granting diplomatic privileges to Israeli officials.

Although Starmer’s administration recognized the State of Palestine in 2025 with conditions and imposed limited sanctions on Israeli settlements, his inconsistent foreign policy and domestic crackdowns left him isolated. Observers noted that his resignation followed growing dissatisfaction across political and public spheres.

Keir Starmer quits as UK Prime Minister amid Gaza policy backlash and Israel support controversy

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced his resignation, stating that a new prime minister will take office after the summer recess. He has instructed the ruling Labour Party to begin the process of selecting his successor. According to a BBC report, several senior Labour figures are being discussed as potential candidates, with Andy Burnham emerging as the strongest contender.

Burnham, currently serving as Mayor of Greater Manchester for nearly a decade, is widely regarded as a popular leader within the party and among voters. He recently won a parliamentary seat, strengthening his national political standing. Other names in discussion include former Health Minister Wes Streeting, former Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner, former Energy Minister Ed Miliband, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, and Defence Minister Al Carns.

The leadership race is expected to determine the future direction of the Labour Party, with attention now focused on which candidate secures the most support once the selection process begins.

Keir Starmer resigns as UK prime minister, Labour begins search for new leader

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced his resignation as both the country's leader and the head of the ruling Labour Party. He made the announcement on Monday during a statement at Downing Street, marking the end of the sixth prime ministerial tenure in the United Kingdom over the past decade. Starmer said he would continue to serve as prime minister until the Labour Party elects a new leader, and he confirmed that he had spoken with King Charles III earlier in the day.

Starmer stated that every decision he made was guided by his commitment to put his country first. He said he would accept his party’s decision with courtesy and offer full and unconditional support to his successor. He acknowledged that questions had been raised within the party about whether he was the right person to lead Labour into the next general election, and he accepted the party’s response.

He has asked the Labour Party’s National Executive Committee to begin the process of selecting a new leader, with nominations opening on July 9. His resignation comes less than two years after he promised to bring stability to British politics following a decisive election victory.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer resigns, will stay until Labour elects new leader

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is expected to announce his departure schedule on Monday, paving the way for a smooth transfer of power to his rival Andy Burnham. This would make Burnham the country’s seventh leader in ten years. Starmer, who came to power promising to end political turmoil, has faced mounting pressure within two years of his tenure, especially after Burnham’s decisive parliamentary victory over a Reform UK candidate.

Burnham’s win has revived optimism among Labour lawmakers who believe his communication skills could help reverse the party’s decline under Starmer. However, the anticipated leadership change carries risks. Burnham has yet to clarify his positions on foreign, economic, and defense policies, and may face pressure from bond market investors wary of increased borrowing, as well as from voters frustrated over living costs and public services.

Analysts and investors remain divided over Burnham’s economic stance, while party insiders suggest possible compromises among leadership contenders. If Starmer confirms his resignation, it will mark the most frequent leadership turnover in nearly two centuries, reflecting voter discontent over economic and governance failures.

Keir Starmer expected to announce exit, paving way for Andy Burnham as UK’s seventh leader in a decade

Palestine supporters in the United Kingdom foresee a potential shift in the country’s Middle East and Israel policies as political changes loom. The rise of the Green Party in local elections, declining popularity of Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and growing sentiment within the Labour Party to halt arms exports to Israel have intensified speculation. Andy Burnham, the Labour Mayor of Greater Manchester, recently won a by-election in Makerfield with 54.80 percent of the vote, positioning him as a leading contender to replace Starmer.

Polls show Burnham, aged 56, as the most popular Labour politician, while Starmer faces one of his lowest approval ratings. A survey by Medical Aid for Palestinians found that 87 percent of Labour members support ending trade with illegal settlements and 78 percent back a full arms embargo on Israel. Burnham has maintained a balanced stance toward both Israel and Palestine, calling for a ceasefire and humanitarian aid for Gaza while supporting Israel’s right to targeted operations under international law.

Analysts suggest that a leadership change could bring further policy adjustments, following Labour’s 2024 decisions to partially suspend arms exports to Israel and recognize Palestine as a state.

Andy Burnham leads Labour race as UK debates possible Middle East policy shift

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is facing growing pressure to announce his resignation as questions over his political future intensify. Cabinet colleague Peter Kyle confirmed that Starmer is reflecting on the 'political reality' following Andy Burnham’s by-election victory in Makerfield, which has emboldened calls within the Labour Party for a leadership change. Senior ministers and several Labour MPs have urged Starmer to set a timetable for stepping down, suggesting that Burnham’s win has opened the door for a new leadership contest.

The pressure increased after U.S. President Donald Trump publicly criticized Starmer’s immigration and energy policies, predicting his resignation. Despite the mounting calls, Starmer has vowed to fight any formal leadership challenge. Kyle stated that the prime minister is taking time to consider how the situation has evolved and will act in the country’s best interest. Some Labour figures, including MP Toby Perkins, warned that another leadership change could deepen political instability.

Reports in British newspapers suggest Starmer may soon announce his resignation schedule, while potential successors such as Andy Burnham and Wes Streeting prepare for a possible leadership race.

Keir Starmer faces rising pressure to resign as Labour leadership challenge intensifies

Speculation has intensified in the United Kingdom’s political circles over Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s possible resignation. The Observer reported that Starmer could announce his decision and a potential timeline for stepping down by Monday. However, an internal government source stated that he remains fully focused on his duties as prime minister. The discussions reportedly include consultations with his wife at the official residence, Chequers, as well as with senior Labour figures.

The speculation follows months of internal dissatisfaction within the Labour Party, which escalated after Andy Burnham’s by-election victory positioned him to formally challenge Starmer’s leadership. Despite leading Labour to a major victory in 2024, Starmer’s popularity has since declined due to policy controversies and unmet promises on living standards. Reuters reported that over a hundred Labour MPs have publicly urged him to resign or set a departure date.

Observers suggest that if Starmer resigns, the UK could see its seventh prime minister in a decade, marking another phase of political instability. Burnham and former health minister Wes Streeting are being discussed as potential successors.

The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) has confirmed that the ancient 'Major Oak' tree in England’s Sherwood Forest, famously associated with the legend of Robin Hood, has died. The oak, estimated to be around 1,200 years old, had a trunk circumference of about 36 feet and was a major tourist attraction. Experts noticed its declining health over recent years, and the absence of new leaves this spring confirmed its death.

RSPB’s Sherwood Forest senior site manager Holly Drake described the loss as heartbreaking for those who cared for the tree and for visitors worldwide. The exact cause of death remains uncertain, though experts cited poor soil quality, root decay, and long-term use of metal supports as possible factors. Climate change, heatwaves, and droughts may also have contributed to its decline.

Although no longer alive, the Major Oak will remain standing as a symbol of natural heritage and a habitat for wildlife. RSPB noted that new saplings grown from its acorns and branches have been planted globally to preserve its legacy.
