A Bangladeshi youth was shot and killed by India’s Border Security Force (BSF) near the Sharifpur border in Kulaura upazila of Moulvibazar on Saturday night. The deceased, identified as Pradeep Baidya, 30, reportedly attempted to cross into India when he was shot on sight. BSF personnel took his body into custody. BGB commander Lt. Col. ASM Zakaria stated that while they heard about the incident from locals, no formal complaint had yet been filed and BSF had not communicated any information.

Supporters of BNP leader Ishraque Hossain once again besieged the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) headquarters, demanding he be sworn in as Mayor. Protesters locked all entrances, halting all municipal services. They claimed the movement had paused only due to public holidays and events marking Ziaur Rahman’s death anniversary. “We will not stop until Ishraque receives his rightful position,” said one demonstrator.

Following the Supreme Court’s decision overturning a High Court verdict that had declared Jamaat-e-Islami’s registration illegal, the Election Commission awaits formal court instructions before taking action. EC Secretary Akhtar Ahmed stated that the Commission would decide upon receiving the directive. Jamaat had received provisional registration on November 4, 2008. The International Crimes Tribunal has accepted charges against three individuals, identifying Sheikh Hasina as the key instigator in a crimes against humanity case filed in July-August. This marks the first formal judicial proceedings against the former Prime Minister. Arrest warrants have been issued for Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal. Chhatra Shibir leader Sadiq Kayem has accused the ruling Awami League of committing judicial killings of Jamaat-e-Islami and opposition leaders under fabricated charges of war crimes. Nobel Laureate and Chief Adviser Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus will receive the prestigious King Charles Harmony Award 2025. He is scheduled to travel to London on June 10 at the invitation of King Charles III, who will personally present the award. Meetings with UK government officials are also planned. Public sector employee unions continued their protests on Sunday, demanding the repeal of the Government Jobs (Amendment) Ordinance 2025. Following an attack on Jatiya Party chairman GM Quader’s residence in Rangpur, the joint forces have sought cooperation from the Discrimination Resistance Student Movement and BNP leaders to identify those involved. Lawyer Shishir Monir has stated that the Supreme Court has declared Jamaat-e-Islami’s registration valid and has nullified the High Court’s verdict. The Election Commission has been directed to take necessary steps regarding the party’s registration and related matters. While today’s brief ruling didn’t explicitly mention the party’s electoral symbol (the scale), Monir said that the EC has been given authority to resolve these issues. Sheikh Hasina has been officially named the prime accused in the “July Massacre” case filed at the International Criminal Court. Chief Prosecutor Tazul Islam submitted the charges on Sunday afternoon. The trial was broadcast live on Bangladesh Television (BTV). Other co-accused in the case include Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun.

Israeli newspaper Haaretz reports that 20 hostages held by Hamas in Gaza have died as a result of Israel’s military operations. The ongoing offensive, now lasting over 600 days since October 7, 2023, has endangered the lives of at least 54 other Israeli captives. The report suggests that many hostages died either directly from Israeli strikes or from military activity near their locations. Despite efforts to avoid collateral damage, Israeli forces have approved strikes within a few hundred meters of known hostage sites.
