President of the Primary Teachers’ Association, Aminul Islam Chowdhury, has announced a hunger strike starting June 23 if their three-point demand is not met. He labeled a 2020 finance ministry letter regarding time scale for nationalized teachers as illegal and misleading. The association demands seniority be calculated based on actual service time and that the gazette for deprived head teachers be published. A mass rally has been called at Dhaka’s Central Shaheed Minar on June 22, with thousands of teachers from across the country expected to attend.
Advisor Muhammad Fawzul Kabir Khan has stated that illegal gas connections exist in almost every area. He emphasized that action is being taken against Titas Gas officials responsible for these unauthorized setups. A large-scale operation will soon be launched to disconnect illegal lines and hold those involved accountable. Kabir acknowledged that some of the industrialists’ complaints about gas shortages were valid and said efforts are underway to address the issue. Shahadat Hossain Sohel, director of Towel Tex Ltd., said, “We don’t need gas for 24 hours—just at least 8 hours. The shortage is affecting production and increasing costs.”
On Sunday, formal charges in the case against Sheikh Hasina will be submitted to the International Crimes Tribunal. With the tribunal’s permission, the proceedings will be broadcast live on Bangladesh Television (BTV), according to the prosecution. Chief Prosecutor Tazul Islam had earlier confirmed that formal charges would be officially filed that day.
Due to inclement weather in Dhaka, four incoming flights were diverted to Chattogram’s Shah Amanat International Airport between 4:30 PM and 5:15 PM on Saturday. Airport public relations officer Md. Ibrahim Khalil said the flights could not land in Dhaka because of poor weather conditions. He confirmed that the flights will resume their journey to Dhaka once the weather improves.
Shibir leader Sadik Kayem accused the BNP’s student wing of launching an unprovoked attack on their help desk at Chattogram Commerce College. The help desk was set up to assist students, but was allegedly vandalized and its volunteers assaulted. A similar incident occurred at Rangpur Police Lines, where the Shibir had established a free help desk for students. Sadik claimed that while there should be competition in doing good, student politics is instead descending into violence and suppression. He warned that if the path of violence continues, they will organize mass resistance with students and the public.
Speaking at a workers’ conference in Kishoreganj, Jamaat leader Professor Mujibur Rahman declared, “Those who avoid justice are the ones calling for rushed elections without reform.” He criticized the 2014 and 2018 elections as illegitimate and claimed that the 2024 election was a staged affair. “People want real elections, not sham ones,” he added. He demanded that all those involved in unlawful killings be brought to justice before any reforms or elections are undertaken. “We will not accept an election without justice first,” he asserted.
BNP leader Salahuddin Ahmed has said that although the government is holding discussions with political parties, there is no tangible progress. He emphasized the need for real action to restore public trust. He also mentioned that Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus has invited the BNP for another round of talks on June 2. “The people of Bangladesh demand elections before December. Reforms and elections must go hand in hand,” he said. Salahuddin warned that if the Constitutional Reform Commission seeks to impose changes unilaterally, it will not be democracy—it will be a return to autocracy.
At least 150 people have been killed in sudden floods that swept through Mokwa, a city in Nigeria's central Niger State, earlier this week, according to emergency agency spokesperson Ibrahim Audu Husseini. He warned that the death toll could rise further. The disaster has displaced over 3,000 people, completely destroyed 300 homes, and washed away two bridges. Earlier, the Daily Trust newspaper reported that thousands were left homeless and more than 50 children from an Islamic school were missing.
RAB-10 has arrested four individuals, including a local student leader, with 82 kg of marijuana in Shyampur. The detained include Russell Mahmud, convenor of the Shashidal Union unit of the BNP’s student wing, along with Yusuf, Sujon, and Saiful Islam Sabbir. A pickup van used in drug transport was also seized. RAB claims Russell is a known drug trafficker. Faisal Ahmed Bhuiyan, organizing secretary of the local BNP student wing, confirmed the arrest and stated that disciplinary action will be taken against Russell.
At least 40 people were injured in a series of dog attacks in Faridganj, Chandpur. The incidents occurred on Friday in Paikpara South Union and parts of Faridganj Municipality. Among the injured, 23 people received treatment at the Upazila Health Complex, while others were treated at private hospitals in the district. The attacks sparked panic in the community. Municipal Executive Officer Shah Sufian Khan confirmed that those seeking vaccines were promptly inoculated.
Authorities have imposed a three-month ban on entry into the Sundarbans forest from June 1 to August 31. Tourists and forest-dependent locals will not be allowed access during this time. Sundarbans DFO AZM Hasanur Rahman stated that the ban was implemented to allow 251 fish species in the forest to spawn during the monsoon. He noted that public announcements were made to inform local communities. India’s Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan has, for the first time, acknowledged that the country lost several fighter jets during a skirmish with Pakistan earlier this month. Advisor Asif Mahmud reported that Bangladesh’s foreign debt repayments rose by 24.73% during the first ten months of the current fiscal year compared to the same period last year. Posting on Facebook, he stated that from July to April of FY 2024–25, the country repaid $3.5 billion, surpassing the total repayment of the entire previous fiscal year. Of this, approximately $2.02 billion was principal repayment—32.86% higher than the same period last year. He also noted a reduction in urban waterlogging despite heavy rainfall.
Jamaat-e-Islami has announced plans to hold a major public rally in Dhaka’s Suhrawardy Udyan on June 21 at 2 PM, following what it calls the “historic mass uprising that toppled fascist Sheikh Hasina.” Party leader Ehsanul Mahbub Zubayer confirmed that an application has been submitted to the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) seeking permission for the venue. Top Jamaat leaders will attend, and invitations will be extended to like-minded political allies. “The rally’s confirmation depends on securing the venue,” he added, noting that preparations are already underway. This would mark the party’s first large gathering in the capital since the alleged regime change.
