Leaders and activists of the Kabi Nazrul Government College unit of Chhatra Dal held a protest rally in Dhaka on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, condemning an alleged attack by Islami Chhatra Shibir members on their activists in Chattogram City College. The clash reportedly stemmed from wall writings opposing secret political activities on the Chattogram campus. The rally began at the main gate of Kabi Nazrul College, moved through Bahadur Shah Park and Ray Shaheb Bazar, and concluded at the college’s open stage, where a brief assembly took place. During the gathering, participants chanted slogans against Jamaat-Shibir and secret political practices. College unit convener Irfan Ahmed Fahim accused certain groups of conducting covert politics under the guise of campus restrictions on student politics. He warned that any attempt to continue such activities or attacks on Chhatra Dal members and general students would face strong resistance. The protest reflected growing tensions over alleged underground political activities in educational institutions following restrictions on formal student politics.

A body buried under mistaken identity was exhumed in Madhupur, Tangail, 20 months after burial. The deceased was identified as Mejbabul Islam, 30, son of Hafizur Rahman from Dakshin Hatibandha village in Sundarganj, Gaibandha. The exhumation took place on Wednesday in the presence of an executive magistrate, and the remains were handed over to the rightful family. According to the report, police recovered a throat-slit body on July 31, 2024, from a garden beside the Nabinagar-Chandra highway in Ashulia, Dhaka. A local resident, Hayrat Ali, mistakenly identified it as his son Ridoy and buried it in Madhupur. However, Ridoy returned alive on August 7 of the same year, leading to confusion. The Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education have decided to review the final results of the government primary school assistant teacher recruitment exam held under the interim government. After more than two months of silence, the ministries have initiated the formation of a committee to examine the process, which has been marred by allegations of irregularities, question leaks, and rushed procedures. Minister Dr. A N M Ehsanul Haque Milan confirmed that the recruitment of 14,000 teachers is under review and that a committee will oversee the process. The controversy stems from the recruitment exam conducted on January 9 across 61 districts, excluding the three hill districts, with final results published on February 8. Despite completing medical and verification procedures by early March, the appointment process has stalled without explanation. Over 14,000 selected candidates have expressed frustration and uncertainty, holding press conferences and submitting memorandums to the Prime Minister through district commissioners, demanding immediate appointment dates. The prolonged delay has caused anxiety among the recommended candidates, some warning of possible protests if no progress is seen within ten days.

Members of the Rajshahi University unit of Islami Chhatra Shibir held a photo session beside a wall writing by Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) that read “Ban secret politics” on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, near the university’s central library. The event followed recent tensions between the two student groups over similar wall writings at Chattogram City College. Tajul Islam, the unit’s Dawah secretary and vice president of Motihar Hall Students’ Union, said Shibir’s activities were open and public, citing their involvement in career guidance events, publication festivals, and medical camps. He argued that Shibir had never engaged in secret politics and criticized those who, according to him, had operated secretly for years or from abroad. Unit president Mujahid Faisal stated they took photos beside the wall out of appreciation for the effort and agreed that politics should be conducted openly within the country. The photo session came a day after JCD members held a protest march demanding a ban on what they called “secret politics” by Jamaat-Shibir on campus.

A group of farmers in Shariatpur drew attention after carrying their shallow irrigation machines on their shoulders to a local fuel station to collect fuel. The unusual scene, captured in a video that went viral on social media on April 22, 2026, showed the farmers preparing to refuel their machines directly at the pump. The incident took place earlier on April 18 at Messrs Chokdar Filling Station in Dogri Bazar, Naria upazila. According to the station operator, the farmers acted on the belief that fuel could not be sold in bottles or drums, a restriction that had previously existed. Although current regulations allow limited bottle sales for agricultural use with proper authorization, many farmers remain unaware of the updated rules. The operator explained that local authorities have now permitted limited bottled fuel sales to ease farmers’ access. Local residents reacted with mixed opinions, noting that the incident reflected a lack of clear communication and information among rural farmers. Stakeholders urged authorities to improve awareness and ensure smoother fuel distribution for agricultural needs.

Iran has announced its full readiness to take part in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani confirmed the information to state broadcaster IRIB on April 22, stating that the Ministry of Sports and Youth has completed all necessary preparations for the national team’s participation. FIFA President Gianni Infantino had earlier said that Iran’s participation was expected in the tournament scheduled from June 11 to July 19. In March, US President Donald Trump expressed doubts about whether it would be appropriate for the Iranian team to attend the World Cup, citing concerns for their “life and safety.” Infantino, however, emphasized that football unites the world and that Iran had earned its place in the competition through merit. The announcement underscores Iran’s determination to compete on the global stage despite political sensitivities surrounding its participation in the North American-hosted event.

U.S. President Donald Trump said a positive development could emerge by Friday regarding a second round of peace talks with Iran. According to The New York Post, citing Islamabad-based sources, the discussions might resume within 36 to 72 hours. When asked about potential progress, Trump responded via text message saying, “It’s possible! – President D.J.T.” Iran’s semi-official Tasnim News Agency immediately rejected the claim, posting on social media that Trump was lying and that Iran had no plans to join talks on Friday. Earlier, Trump had extended the existing ceasefire with Iran to allow more time for negotiations, and the truce remained effective as no new clashes occurred. Trump noted that the United States had not set a specific deadline for Iran’s next move and credited consultations with Pakistan’s leadership for this approach. He added that U.S. forces were instructed to maintain the blockade and uphold the ceasefire until Iran presented a unified proposal.

National Citizen Party (NCP) spokesperson Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan said there are still opportunities for appeal and writ petitions regarding the suspension of Monira Sharmin’s candidacy for a reserved women’s seat in parliament. He expressed hope that the issue could be resolved through proper legal procedures. Asif made the remarks on Wednesday afternoon while visiting injured journalist Imran Hossain at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. He explained that the issue surrounding Monira Sharmin’s eligibility involves a three-year restriction related to government employment, not matters such as loan default or foreign citizenship. Asif also stated that the party maintains confidence in the Election Commission’s decision. Earlier, the Election Commission suspended Monira Sharmin’s candidacy until 12 p.m. on Thursday, April 23. According to the Representation of the People Order (RPO), a person is ineligible to become a Member of Parliament within three years of resigning or retiring from any government or statutory body position.

Opposition Leader Dr. Shafiqur Rahman expressed outrage in the Bangladesh Parliament after a ruling party member allegedly used threatening and unparliamentary language during a session. Speaking on Wednesday during the discussion on the motion of thanks to the President’s address, Rahman said the remarks had hurt the opposition and questioned whether the MP was inciting public disorder. He demanded that the comments be expunged from the parliamentary record. The Speaker, Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, responded that the matter would be reviewed and any unparliamentary words would be removed if found. He added that certain expressions were part of Bangladesh’s political discourse and urged members not to interrupt while others were speaking. The incident occurred during a session where BNP MP Abdul Wadud Bhuiyan had sharply criticized the opposition while participating in the debate. The Speaker’s assurance to examine the language suggests that a procedural review may follow to determine whether the remarks violated parliamentary norms.

A political debate erupted in Europe after European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen mentioned Turkey alongside Russia and China in a recent speech. Speaking at an event in Hamburg marking the 80th anniversary of the German newspaper Die Zeit, von der Leyen reaffirmed her support for European Union enlargement and said Europe must build a more unified geopolitical stance. Her comment that Europe should remain free from the influence of Russia, Turkey, or China drew immediate criticism. Members of the European Parliament Rudy Kennes and Marc Botenga warned that such remarks risk dividing the world into opposing blocs and ignoring the reality of a multipolar global order. In an interview with Anadolu, Kennes linked the statement to broader geopolitical tensions involving the United States and its allies, arguing that Western influence is declining in a multipolar world. The European Commission later clarified that Turkey remains an important partner for the EU, citing cooperation on migration management, economic ties, and strategic connectivity through the Trans-Caspian Middle Corridor.

Around 3,000 containers destined for Iran have been stranded at Pakistan’s Karachi port due to heightened tensions and a naval blockade in the Strait of Hormuz. Documents recently surfaced requesting assistance to release the containers, which were originally meant to reach Iran through trans-shipment but were unloaded in Karachi instead. Discussions are underway with Pakistani authorities to use a land route to move the containers to the border, from where Iranian trucks would transport them into Iran. Maritime experts and shipping industry sources noted that Iran has been collecting tolls from China in yuan and cryptocurrency, charging about one dollar per barrel of oil and setting cargo fees based on oil prices. This system has generated significant revenue for Iran. However, the United States has reportedly found ways to disrupt this supply chain, with several vessels already detained under the naval blockade. Experts believe the blockade functions more as a pressure tactic against Iran than as a direct act of war.
