At least six migrants lost their lives, and 40 remain missing after a boat capsized near Lampedusa, Italy, the United Nations refugee agency confirmed on Wednesday. The Italian Coast Guard has so far rescued ten individuals and resumed search operations at dawn to locate more survivors. According to the rescued migrants, a group of 56 people fell into the water due to rough weather conditions. They had set out from Tunisia on a small dinghy, attempting to reach European shores. In 2023, a total of 41,584 migrants crossed the Eastern Mediterranean migration route into the EU, a significant increase from 12,758 in 2022.

Israeli Ambassador to India, Reuven Azar, has stated that Israel’s military operations in Gaza will continue until the region is completely free of Hamas. He asserted that Hamas has “two options”—to release all hostages and disarm entirely. Azar claimed that the 42-day temporary ceasefire had ended because Hamas failed to release captives. He argued that Israel has no choice but to take military action, despite Hamas already releasing more hostages than initially agreed. In contrast, Israel has been slow in fulfilling its commitment to releasing Palestinian prisoners.

A fifth-grade student accused of attempting to rape a four-year-old girl in Jashore has been taken into police custody. However, a group of enraged students repeatedly attempted to snatch him from police custody, injuring a constable in the process. According to the child’s father, he and his wife were away for work when they returned home to find their neighbor’s son attempting to assault their daughter. News of the incident spread, prompting students from Jashore Government MM College and Zilla School to intervene. A clash erupted between the protesters and the suspect’s family, leading to a tense standoff before police secured the suspect and transported him to the station.

Two employees of the Raipura Upazila Election Office in Narsingdi have been arrested for illegally selling National ID (NID) data in exchange for money. The detainees are Nahidul Islam, a data entry operator, and Ashikul Islam, a scanning operator. Election Officer Din Mohammad Russell stated that a four-member investigative committee from the National Identity Registration Division verified the allegations before making the arrests. Authorities found evidence of 1.2 million BDT in transactions in Ashikul’s mobile banking account, while Nahidul’s account showed transactions worth approximately 200,000 BDT.

Leading editors from print and electronic media have urged the government to prioritize inflation control, investment growth, and job creation in the upcoming budget. They recommended raising the personal income tax exemption threshold to over 400,000 BDT and expanding social security programs. Economic Advisor Salehuddin Ahmed stated that the new budget will not include extravagant mega projects or empty promises but will focus on building an equitable and welfare-oriented economy. He emphasized that Bangladesh cannot afford to delay its transition from LDC status and must tackle corruption and reduce unnecessary expenditures.

Hefazat-e-Islam’s Joint Secretary General, Maulana Azizul Haque, has strongly condemned the Israeli military’s attacks on Gaza, accusing them of violating the ceasefire agreement. He claimed that the occupation forces, with backing from the US, have killed over 400 Palestinians. Haque urged the global community to stand by the oppressed people of Palestine and demanded that Netanyahu’s government be held accountable for war crimes. He also expressed concern over the increasing persecution of Muslims in India, citing incidents where an imam was sued for using a loudspeaker for the call to prayer and Muslim worshippers were attacked under the pretext of Holi celebrations. Haque warned that if these injustices continue, resistance will be organized against the Indian authorities.

Police have recovered the body of Maulana Lutfur Rahman (72), a senior scholar of Al Jamia Imdadiya Madrasa and the khatib of Bottola Kachari Mosque, from a rented house near the historic Sholakia Eidgah in Kishoreganj. The victim’s wife discovered his body with his throat slit inside a washroom on Wednesday afternoon after hearing sudden screams. He was rushed to the emergency department of a medical college hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Officer-in-Charge Abdullah Al Mamun confirmed that an investigation is underway to identify the perpetrators.

A businessman, Syed Mohammad Faruqi Hasan, has been revealed for bringing 721 crore taka from China to Bangladesh under the pretext of foreign income, evading 180 crore taka in taxes. The money was transferred over several years, and Faruqi has connections with the ruling Awami League. Despite claiming to have used the funds to establish factories and create jobs, investigations show the funds were transferred without paying taxes. Faruqi has since fled the country, and NBR is continuing its probe.

Twenty-one Bangladeshi men, women, and children who were trafficked to India with promises of work have been repatriated to Bangladesh after serving various sentences. The Indian police transferred them to the Benapole border. Rights organization, Rights Jessore, has provided legal assistance to 10 individuals, while Justice and Care has assisted 11 others. These individuals were detained for illegal entry into India at different border points. A representative from Justice and Care mentioned that if the repatriated Bangladeshis identify the traffickers and seek legal aid, assistance will be provided.

Miraj Khan (35), the Youth League president of a UP unit in Rajbari, has been arrested by the police in connection with an attack on students during a mass uprising. OC Mohammad Mahmudur Rahman stated that the assault occurred on August 5th, around 12:30 PM, when homemade weapons were used to attack the students, parents, teachers, and the general public at Goyaldong Mor. In addition, gunfire was indiscriminately shot at the crowd. Several individuals, including Zubaida Islam Sohana, Tushar Patwari, San Sardar, Triasha, Ayesha, Cynthia, Asma Khatun, Tawhid Rabbil, Munna, and Billal Hossain, were injured and shot during the incident. A case was filed in the incident on September 2nd in the district.

On Wednesday, the Director-General of the Election Commission’s NID Division, ASM Humayun Kabir, held a meeting with a UNHCR delegation at the Election Commission office. During the meeting, he mentioned that the information available with UNHCR is also sought by the government. A memorandum of understanding has been signed with the government, allowing the sharing of data regarding the Rohingyas. Discussions focused on how this data can be obtained. He further noted that with elections approaching, Rohingyas are attempting to enter the system. The sooner the data is available, the more beneficial it will be, enabling better control. This will reduce the need for much effort in preventing the Rohingyas from entering the system.

A clash broke out between two factions of the BNP during an iftar gathering in Nandail, resulting in 10 injuries. Following the incident, the local administration imposed Section 144 in the area surrounding Shahid Smriti College ground. The conflict was triggered by a dispute among three factions within the local BNP over the formation of the new party committee. The newly formed BNP committee, led by Yasir Khan Chowdhury, organized the iftar at the same time and place where another faction, led by Azizul Hai Pikul, had also planned their event. The disagreement led to a violent clash between the two groups.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir shared that the country is currently facing extremely difficult times. Despite having a fascism-free environment, he said they are still struggling to find the right path for democracy. He stressed that a democratic Bangladesh remains their core aspiration and highlighted the urgent need for unity to resolve current issues through dialogue. Fakhrul assured that if the BNP is elected by the people, the party will implement its 31-point agenda. He called for immediate elections, emphasizing that only an elected government can bring about necessary reforms.

Hifazat-e-Islam’s central leader, Allama Mhuimuddin Rabbani, stated that while Hifazat does not engage in politics or seek power, political parties must align themselves with Hifazat’s demands. He emphasized that no one can attain power by bypassing Hifazat. He also criticized the current government for its oppressive tactics against Hifazat over the past 16 years, which resulted in numerous martyrs. He stated that no election should take place in Bangladesh without justice for the martyrs. Rabbani also condemned Israel’s violent actions in Palestine, calling it a disgrace to humanity, and expressed deep concerns about the persecution of Muslims in India.

In Gazipur’s Konabari, over 800 workers at a garment factory went on strike demanding their Eid bonuses, holiday pay, and half of this month’s salary. The strike began at 8:30 AM, and workers expressed dissatisfaction with the factory’s management, accusing them of neglecting their demands. The workers voiced frustration over the owner’s refusal to address their issues, particularly around the Eid holiday. Sample man Shamsuddin mentioned that staff would receive their overdue payments, but workers still struggle to secure their rightful wages.
