A meeting held at the University Grants Commission (UGC) on Sunday, attended by a 32-member student delegation, finalized the decision to establish a new university for the capital’s seven government colleges under the name ‘Dhaka Central University.’ During discussions, students presented two different opinions regarding the university’s name. Seventeen students supported the name ‘Dhaka Central University,’ while others opposed it, arguing that ‘Dhaka College’ was previously known as ‘Dhaka Central College.’ Instead, they suggested naming it ‘Federal University.’

A divisional-level dialogue on disaster forecast-based early warning was held in Khulna under the leadership of the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief, with support from the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society, the International Red Cross, and the Red Crescent Federation. The event focused on identifying vulnerabilities in cyclone- and heatwave-prone districts in the southwestern region of Bangladesh and enhancing forecast-based humanitarian assistance. Bangladesh Red Crescent Society Chairman, Major General Dr. Azizul Islam, emphasized the need to implement the decisions made during the dialogue to ensure tangible improvements rather than keeping them confined to paperwork.

The Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) has recommended raising the annual tax-free income threshold from 350,000 BDT to 400,000 BDT for individual taxpayers in the upcoming fiscal year. Women and senior citizens (65+) will also have a 400,000 BDT exemption, while disabled individuals and transgender taxpayers will be exempt up to 475,000 BDT. Freedom fighters will have a 500,000 BDT exemption.

Four individuals suspected of being robbers were beaten by locals in Shibchar, Madaripur, before being handed over to the police. Authorities recovered knives and sharp weapons from them. The suspects were spotted acting suspiciously near Pachchar Circle early Sunday morning. When confronted, they tried to attack locals but were overpowered and captured.

A factional clash within BNP in Raozan, Chattogram, resulted in the death of Komor Uddin (36), a Jubo Dal activist aligned with BNP Vice Chairman Gias Uddin Quader Chowdhury. Attorney General Md. Asaduzzaman stated that the tragic death of Abrar Fahad has given Bangladesh's intellectual community a renewed sense of justice. A clash between the United People's Democratic Front (UPDF) and the Parbatya Chattogram Jana Samhati Samiti (JSS), led by Santu Larma, erupted in Manikchhari, Rangamati, on Sunday morning. Authorities in Debidwar, Comilla, shut down five illegal brick kilns and imposed fines totaling 500,000 BDT. Assistant Commissioner (Land) Raihanul Islam led the operation, targeting Five Star Bricks, KMB Bricks, Russell Bricks, Sonia Bricks, and Debidwar Bricks. Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has seized 2,000 Yaba pills from a drug dealer in Bhurungamari, Kurigram. The suspect tried to escape but abandoned a motorcycle and the drugs upon noticing BGB personnel. The seized items were taken to the Diyadanga camp for further investigation.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres left Dhaka on Sunday morning after a four-day official visit. Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan and High Representative for Rohingya Affairs Khalilur Rahman bid him farewell at the airport. Before leaving, he had a phone conversation with Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus. During his visit, Guterres met with high-ranking officials and visited Rohingya refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar, where he shared an Iftar meal with 100,000 Rohingya refugees.

US airstrikes in Yemen have killed at least 23 people, including four children and a woman, with many others injured. Kazi Raisul Islam Selim, Chairman of Moukaron Union Parishad in Patuakhali, has been accused of embezzling nearly 3 million BDT by not executing 16 development projects. Abul Kalam Azad, President of Moukaron Union BNP, filed a written complaint with the District Commissioner on March 9, alleging that he was listed as a project chairman without his knowledge. Selim allegedly used his close ties with former minister Asaduzzaman Kamal to facilitate corruption.

Jamaat-e-Islami has taken responsibility for the family of Aciya, a young girl from Magura. In a Facebook post, Jamaat Amir Shafiqul Rahman stated that Aciya’s family is extremely vulnerable, as her father is mentally ill and there are no other male members in the household. Jamaat has pledged to support them, trusting in Allah. The family has already been informed of the decision.
