On Sunday in Mirpur, Home Affairs Advisor Jahangir Alam urged traders not to increase the prices of essential goods during Ramadan. He pointed out that in other religious communities and Middle Eastern Muslim countries, prices are often lowered during festivals, while in Bangladesh, the opposite occurs. He noted that prices are already lower than last year and emphasized that maintaining stable prices without government intervention would be ideal. Regarding the arrest of two female smokers, he mentioned that they had thrown hot tea at bystanders when confronted, urging the public to remain calm in such situations.

Ignoring an immediate withdrawal order from the Home Affairs Advisor, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Chakaria Police Station, Manzur Kader Bhuiyan, was initially transferred to Ukhiya Police Station. However, following widespread criticism, he was withdrawn within 24 hours. The issue arose after journalists accused the OC of abduction and torture during a press briefing in Cox’s Bazar. The advisor, Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, ordered his dismissal on the spot, but instead, he was transferred. Amid public outrage, the Chattogram Range DIG, Ahsan Habib Palash, ordered his withdrawal and reassignment to the Chattogram Range Police on Sunday night.

Protesters have been staging a sit-in at Raju Sculpture in Dhaka University for 18 days, demanding the ban of the ruling Awami League and its allies, labeling them as fascist forces. The demonstration, which began on February 13 with a hunger strike by two Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal leaders, later saw participation from Biplobi Chhatra Parishad on February 15. Protesters have also been collecting signatures in support of their five-point demand for justice. In observance of Ramadan, the sit-in organizers have arranged communal Iftar gatherings, where fasting pedestrians are also joining.

On the first day of Ramadan, BNP leaders organized an iftar event with Islamic scholars and orphans, with Tarique Rahman joining virtually from London as the chief guest. In his pre-iftar speech, he extended Ramadan greetings and emphasized that fostering honesty and discouraging wrongdoing could help build the nation. During an inspection of ongoing development work in Uttarkhan, Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Administrator Mohammad Ejaz assured that carpeting on the main road would be completed before Eid. He also mentioned that Dhaka WASA and DESCO have requested permission to dig up roads for water and electricity work. However, considering public inconvenience, DNCC has decided not to approve new road excavations during the monsoon season. On Saturday night, masked assailants attacked Nurul Kabir, the Secretary of Jamaat-e-Islami in Pekua, Cox’s Bazar. The attackers threatened him with sharp weapons and stole his mobile phone before fleeing. Kabir was hospitalized and later filed a complaint with the police. The assault took place as he was returning home from a mediation meeting, during which he was beaten with hockey sticks before the assailants escaped on motorcycles.

A violent incident in Rupganj, Narayanganj, occurred on Saturday night when gunmen fired at the home of Jubo Dal leader Shafiqul Islam Shafiq after he refused to pay extortion money. A passerby, Zafar Ali, was injured in the gunfire. According to Shafiq, a known local shooter named Riaz had been demanding $200,000 from him to purchase a vehicle. Upon his refusal, Riaz and 15-20 armed men attacked his home. Police have recovered bullet casings from the scene, while the accused have denied involvement.

A UK expatriate’s family in Sylhet has accused a local Chhatra League leader of trying to illegally occupy their house. The expatriate’s sister filed a complaint with the Sylhet Police Commissioner, alleging that the tenant—backed by the student leader—refused to vacate and instead demanded a $500,000 extortion payment. She claimed that the group issued threats when the demand was rejected. The Police Commissioner has ordered an investigation, directing the Deputy Police Commissioner to submit a report within 15 days. Despite repeated notices, the accused individuals have not complied, prompting authorities to consider stricter action.

Nobel laureate economist Amartya Sen praised Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the Chief Adviser of Bangladesh’s Interim Government, calling him highly competent and expressing full confidence in his abilities. In an interview with PTI at his Santiniketan residence, Sen described Yunus as an extraordinary person and an old friend. He warned against banning the Awami League, stating that it would repeat past mistakes. While concerned about Bangladesh’s political situation, Sen remains hopeful for a freer and fairer election and believes Yunus faces significant challenges ahead.

A tragic accident in Bhanga, Faridpur, left a motorcyclist dead on Sunday evening, with his body scattered across the highway. The incident occurred when the victim’s motorcycle hit a pothole, causing him to fall onto the road, where an unidentified vehicle ran over him. Police confirmed that his body was mutilated beyond recognition. In a separate incident on Sunday morning, a pickup truck heading toward Bhanga also fell into a pothole, injuring the driver and another passenger.

Following the announcement of an 18-member committee for Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) at Boalmari Government Degree College in Faridpur, 11 members resigned in protest during a press conference on Sunday. The committee was approved a day earlier by Faridpur JCD President Syed Adnan Hossain Anu and General Secretary Tanzimul Hasan Kayes. The resigning leaders alleged that the committee was formed through favoritism, sidelining those who had endured imprisonment and repression during the previous regime. They accused the committee of accommodating beneficiaries of the ruling party. In response, district JCD leaders stated that any confirmed allegations would be addressed.

The current government has started repaying debts left by the previous administration, which allegedly funneled much of the borrowed money out of the country. A report from the central bank revealed that from August to December of the current fiscal year, the government repaid approximately $5.87 billion in loans from the central bank. Additionally, to rescue liquidity-strapped banks affected by financial mismanagement, the government injected an additional $2.25 billion through printed money. As of December, the government’s total debt to banks and non-banking financial institutions stood at $41.5 billion.

An imam in Chandina, Cumilla, was allegedly assaulted after delivering a sermon against bribery and usury during Friday prayers. The attack reportedly took place at Baniyachang village mosque, involving two teachers. Following the incident, the imam’s supporters vandalized several houses in retaliation. Injured imam Md. Hasan Murad stated that he preaches Sunni beliefs and condemns corruption, which some individuals found unacceptable. He accused local UP member Nurul Islam Master, his brother Zakir, and others of orchestrating the attack.

At an Iftar gathering, BNP leader Mirza Abbas accused certain domestic and foreign groups of attempting to create a rift between BNP and sections of the religious community. He warned that such divisions could allow foreign forces to intervene and destabilize the country. Cautioning against new slogans like Inqilab Zindabad, he questioned their meaning, asking, “What does ‘Second Independence’ mean? One person was killed, and three others were injured in a collision between a bus and an auto-rickshaw in Jamalpur on Sunday morning. The accident occurred in Joyrampur on the Jamalpur-Mymensingh road. According to Sadar Police, a bus traveling from Dhaka to Jamalpur collided head-on with a battery-powered auto-rickshaw heading toward Nandina, injuring four people. They were rushed to Jamalpur General Hospital, where one of the injured succumbed to his injuries. Two others were transferred to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment. Enraged by the accident, local residents set fire to the bus. In response to the incident, bus workers staged a one-hour blockade on the Jamalpur-Mymensingh road near the ferry terminal area at noon.
