At a gathering in Manikganj on Saturday, BNP Chairperson Tarique Rahman’s adviser Ataur Rahman Dhaly declared that the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Jamaat-e-Islami cannot coexist in the country’s political landscape. BNP Chairperson’s adviser and Manikganj-3 candidate Afroza Khanam Rita, the chief guest, urged freedom fighters and their families to remain vigilant, warning that political opponents might work secretly to influence votes. Central Muktijoddha Dal President Ishtiaq Aziz Ulfat also spoke, praying for Khaleda Zia’s peace in the afterlife. Several district BNP leaders, including former convener Jamilur Rashid Khan and lawyer Azad Hossain Khan, attended the event alongside freedom fighters and their descendants.

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s leader Dr. Shafiqur Rahman announced that the 11-party alliance led by Jamaat will form a unity government including defeated rivals if it wins the upcoming 13th National Parliamentary Election on February 12. A legal notice has been issued against Dhaka University Central Students' Union (Daksu) member Sormitra Chakma over allegations of making defamatory statements and spreading misinformation. The notice was sent by Supreme Court lawyer Advocate Nazmus Shakib on behalf of Nurul Gani Sagir, vice president of the Dhaka University unit of Jatiya Chhatra Shakti. The announcement was made at a press conference held on Saturday, January 31, at Madhur Canteen on the university campus. According to Sagir, the dispute began after a Facebook post on January 24 about illegal shops on campus, which allegedly led to false extortion claims against him. He held a press conference on January 25, giving the accuser 12 hours to present evidence, but no proof was provided within the set time. As a result, he decided to pursue the matter legally. The notice claims that Chakma’s social media post and subsequent remarks falsely portrayed Sagir as involved in extortion, damaging his personal, social, and political reputation. It demands that Chakma withdraw the allegations, delete the posts, and issue an unconditional apology within ten hours, or face legal action.

Lieutenant General (Retd.) Dr. Chowdhury Hasan Sarwardy, chairman of the Bangladesh Union Member Organization (BISSS), warned that thousands, including July fighters, would face execution if the 'Yes' side fails in the upcoming national referendum. Pezeshkian added that mutual trust is essential for launching an effective diplomatic process and that all parties must demonstrate goodwill and halt warlike and threatening activities across the region. In this context, U.S. President Donald Trump announced Wednesday that a large naval fleet led by the aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln was moving toward Iran, warning that Tehran’s time to reach an understanding with Washington was running out.

Rahman emphasized the need for collective effort to support farmers and youth, noting that farmers endure great hardship and deserve assistance. He called on everyone to stand beside them and the younger generation to ensure national progress. Thousands of BNP leaders and activists from different upazilas of Sirajganj and Pabna gathered at the rally venue from the morning to see Tarique Rahman. By noon, the area and surrounding roads were filled with participants. Rahman traveled from Bogura to Sirajganj by road to attend the event.

Bangladesh’s Ministry of Religious Affairs has announced that the visa application process for 2026 Hajj pilgrims will begin on February 8 and continue until March 20. The ministry issued a circular on January 29 confirming the schedule and outlining the necessary steps for applicants. According to the circular, all pilgrims registered under both government and private arrangements must complete health examinations at government hospitals, as the process is already underway. In line with Saudi government directives, pilgrims must complete health checks, receive required vaccinations, and obtain a fitness certificate before applying for a visa through the Saudi Nusuk platform between February 8 and March 20. The ministry emphasized that no pilgrim will be allowed to perform Hajj without a valid fitness certificate. Registered expatriate Bangladeshis are also required to follow the same procedure and complete their visa applications within the specified timeframe.

A woman and her five-year-old child were killed in a road accident on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway in Chandina, Cumilla, on Saturday morning, January 31, 2026. The incident occurred around 8:30 a.m. near the Iliotganj-Muradnagar road junction at the border of Daudkandi and Chandina upazilas. According to local and police sources, the unidentified woman had just stepped off a local bus named 'Papia Service' with her child when a speeding bus named 'Nilachal' ran them over. The Nilachal bus then collided with a parked mini covered van, severely damaging its rear section. Police confirmed that the woman died at the scene, while the injured child was first taken to a local hospital and later transferred to Daudkandi’s Gauripur Health Complex, where doctors declared the child dead. Iliotganj Highway Police Station Officer-in-Charge Ruhul Amin said the involved buses and the damaged van were seized and taken to the station. Efforts are underway to identify the victims, and legal procedures are in progress.

French authorities rescued more than 6,000 migrants attempting to reach the United Kingdom by small boats in 2025, according to a report from France’s maritime prefecture released on Friday. The report confirmed that at least 25 people died and two remained missing during these perilous journeys across the English Channel. The annual report stated that despite the risks, attempts to cross the Channel increased compared to previous years.
