A major controversy erupted during the World Cup Round of 32 match between Germany and Paraguay when a late extra-time goal by Jonathan Tah was disallowed following a VAR review. In the 102nd minute, Tah headed in a corner from Nathaniel Brown, but Moroccan referee Jalal Zayed overturned the goal after consulting the monitor. The decision, based on an alleged foul by German defender Waldemar Anton on Paraguayan goalkeeper Orlando Gil, became a decisive moment in Germany’s elimination.

The ruling drew sharp criticism from several football figures. Former England captain Alan Shearer called it a “very soft foul,” while Denmark legend Peter Schmeichel described it as “painful.” German coach Jürgen Klopp argued that if such contact is a foul, many set-piece goals would be invalid. Refereeing analysts Patrick Ittrich and Thorsten Kinhöfer also questioned the VAR intervention, saying it was not a “clear and obvious error.”

Supporters of the referee’s decision cited IFAB rules, stating that obstructing a goalkeeper’s movement can constitute a foul. However, critics pointed to inconsistency, noting similar contacts were ignored earlier. Paraguay eventually won 4–3 in the penalty shootout to reach the quarterfinals.

All scheduled banks across Bangladesh will suspend customer-level transactions on Wednesday, July 1, in observance of the annual bank holiday. The suspension also extends to trading activities at the country’s stock exchanges. However, the head offices of Bangladesh Bank and other scheduled banks, along with a few key branches, will remain open on a limited scale to handle administrative and accounting tasks only.

According to Bangladesh Bank regulations, July 1 and December 31 are designated as bank holidays each year. On these days, banks halt customer transactions to complete internal accounting, financial reporting, and administrative work. The observance ensures that institutions can finalize their mid-year and year-end financial statements without disruption from regular operations.

The temporary closure is a routine measure and part of the banking sector’s annual schedule, aimed at maintaining financial transparency and operational efficiency across the system.

US Vice President JD Vance described Iran’s refusal to join the planned talks in Doha, Qatar, as a “Persian bargaining tactic.” Speaking on The Michael Knowles Show, Vance said that technical-level discussions between Washington and Tehran were already underway and scheduled to continue the next day. He noted that the talks were part of an ongoing process rather than a new negotiation.

Vance commented that Iran’s public statements appeared both interesting and frustrating, as Iranian officials publicly denied peace talks while acknowledging technical discussions on a peace agreement with the United States. He characterized this dual approach as a rhetorical style he found difficult to interpret.

Responding to criticism over US engagement with Iran, Vance added that President Donald Trump had demonstrated readiness to use military force if necessary but preferred to do so only to achieve specific objectives.

A Dhaka court sentenced nine individuals, including a man named Mithun, to five years in prison under the Narcotics Control Act. The verdict was delivered on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, by Dhaka’s 10th Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md. Nurul Islam. Each convict was also fined 5,000 taka, with an additional one-month jail term in case of non-payment. Mithun’s uncle, Ayub, who was present in court to hear the verdict, collapsed after learning of his nephew’s sentence and was later declared dead at the nearby National Medical College Hospital.

According to the court’s bench assistant, only Mithun was present during the verdict, while the other eight convicts—Murad, Sabir, Raja, Masum Hossain, Billal, another Raja, Wahidul Sonu, and Jummon Mia—were absconding. Arrest warrants were issued against them along with the sentencing. The case originated from a 2018 RAB-2 raid at Geneva Camp in Mohammadpur, where 1,950 yaba tablets were seized and nine suspects were detained.

Police filed the case the following day, and after investigation, charges were submitted in July 2018. The trial formally began in May 2019, with four witnesses testifying before the verdict.

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar has accused the ruling BNP of misleading the nation by reviving a political issue that was resolved half a century ago. Speaking at a press conference at the National Press Club on Tuesday, he said the government and its party were creating confusion over a settled matter. During the event, Parwar also announced a month-long program marking the second anniversary of the July uprising.

Parwar questioned BNP’s past political decisions, including its alliances and appointments, and alleged that the party was attempting to return fascist forces to power. He criticized the BNP government for excluding key dissent notes from the July Charter and for misrepresenting the results of a national referendum. He also accused certain corporate-backed newspapers of acting as BNP mouthpieces and urged the media to uphold truth and responsibility.

Jamaat’s Assistant Secretary General Dr. Hamidur Rahman Azad added that if the government did not abandon what he called fascist behavior, the party would launch a renewed movement against it.

Former information minister and Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JASAD) president Hasanul Haq Inu has been sentenced in a case over the killing of six people during the July Revolution in Kushtia. The verdict has sparked anger among families of the victims, July fighters, and several political leaders, who expressed dissatisfaction with the court’s decision.

Sujon Mahmud Farazi, son of slain businessman Bablu Farazi, said the verdict failed to include those directly involved in the shooting, including police and local Awami League activists. July fighter Shoaib Hasan Rayan called the ten-year prison sentence an insult to the martyrs and demanded Inu’s execution. Leaders from the National Citizens Party and the local BNP unit also criticized the ruling, urging the government to appeal for a harsher sentence.

In contrast, JASAD’s Kushtia district leadership rejected the verdict, calling it politically motivated and claiming that prosecutors failed to prove Inu’s involvement in the killings. The case relates to the August 5 incident when police opened fire on protesters in Kushtia, killing six people and injuring many others.

The Directorate of Madrasa Education has temporarily suspended the MPO benefits of Md. Mostafa Kamal Uddin Jafri, principal of Muslimia Alim Madrasa in Farajganj Union, Lalmohan, Bhola, following allegations of attempting to fraudulently include an employee in the MPO list. A show-cause notice was issued on June 29, 2026, asking why his MPO should not be permanently canceled within three working days.

According to the office order, the alleged forgery was detected during the June 2026 MPO verification process by the selection and approval committee. The committee found that a fake letter, a false recruitment board, and fabricated result documents were created to support the MPO application of one Md. Sakil for the post of office assistant-cum-computer operator. Even the signature of the director general’s representative was allegedly forged.

The Directorate cited violations of clauses 18.1(g) and (ng) of the 2026 MPO policy. The principal had previously faced similar action in December 2025 for irregularities in another recruitment. He stated that he would challenge the notice, while the acting upazila secondary education officer said the recruitment occurred before his tenure.

Mahmudur Rahman, writing in *Amar Desh* on July 1, 2026, reflected on the second anniversary of the July Revolution that ousted Sheikh Hasina’s government. He recounted his exile in Istanbul during the 2024 quota reform protests that evolved into a broader anti-fascist movement. Rahman described how the uprising forced the former prime minister to flee to India and expressed disappointment that post-revolution politics had devolved into power struggles rather than unity against authoritarianism.

He criticized both ruling and opposition parties for reviving factionalism and warned that such divisions could delegitimize the revolution’s achievements. Rahman accused political leaders of ignoring corruption and aligning with pro-India and former Awami League elements, thereby enabling the return of fascist narratives. He argued that denying the revolutionary nature of July 36 would endanger Bangladesh’s sovereignty and the people’s rights.

Rahman urged current leaders to uphold the spirit of the revolution and avoid rhetoric that mirrors Awami or leftist propaganda. He cautioned that failure to preserve the revolution’s legitimacy could reverse the gains of the movement and threaten national independence.

An investigative report published on July 1, 2026, describes a growing wave of civilian resistance along Bangladesh’s northern border, where local residents are joining Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) patrols to counter alleged unilateral push-in attempts by India’s Border Security Force (BSF). From June 20 to 24, field visits across several northern districts revealed that villagers, including women and youth, are standing guard at night with torches, microphones, and whistles, forming a human barrier against incursions. BGB officials confirmed that this spontaneous public participation has significantly helped prevent unwanted incidents.

Diplomatic sources cited a sharp rise in forced push-ins of ethnic Bengali groups, including women and children, from India’s West Bengal and Tripura states. Bangladesh’s Foreign Ministry reiterated that such actions, conducted without legal or bilateral procedures, violate international border laws and harm bilateral relations. Human Rights Watch also reported that India’s actions breach international norms.

Despite the community’s vigilance, the report highlights severe infrastructural limitations on the Bangladeshi side, including poor border roads that hinder rapid BGB response. Officials and local representatives called for urgent road improvements to strengthen border defense and coordination.
