Authorities have partially blocked access to the popular news website BD Today (www.bdtoday.net) without any prior announcement, according to a report published on January 29, 2026. The site, which has been operating for 14 years, is known for publishing content critical of fascism and Indian hegemony. Its publisher expressed anger over the latest restriction, noting that the site is currently inaccessible on mobile devices.

BD Today’s editor, Dr. Mokarram Hossain, told Amar Desh that the portal is legally registered under Bangladesh’s company law and not an unverified outlet. He said discussions with mobile operators revealed that the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) had ordered the block. The editorial team strongly protested the move and demanded that access be restored immediately.

Attempts to reach BTRC Vice Chairman Md. Abu Bakar Siddique for comment were unsuccessful, but a senior official from a mobile operator confirmed that the block was implemented under BTRC’s directive.

An AI-generated video uploaded on a Facebook page called 'Apa Firbe' falsely depicted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina meeting U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar, claiming the U.S. planned to urge Bangladesh to postpone its 13th parliamentary election. Fact-checking confirmed the video was fake. Authorities said the clip was created two weeks earlier by a group aiming to spread confusion nationwide, and similar AI videos and fake photocards have since gone viral on social media.

Experts warned that such misinformation is fueling social unrest and undermining law and order. The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission has not yet taken steps to curb the spread, while the interim government’s AI policy remains unimplemented. Criminologists and police officials acknowledged the growing problem but cited limited expertise and resources. The Criminal Investigation Department reported no formal complaints yet but said cyber monitoring has been increased.

Fact-checking organizations found AI-generated fake content spreading across political, environmental, and international topics, with election-related misinformation intensifying as the polls approach.

Former ICC president Ehsan Mani has criticized the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) after Bangladesh was excluded from the upcoming T20 World Cup. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) had requested to play its matches in Sri Lanka citing security concerns about traveling to India, but the ICC rejected the proposal and replaced Bangladesh with Scotland. The decision, reportedly influenced by India, has sparked widespread criticism across the cricket world, including within India itself.

In an interview with Telecom Asia, Mani said cricket has lost direction under the ICC’s current structure and called for immediate constitutional reforms to ensure independent and neutral board directors. He blamed political interference and administrative weakness for the current instability. Mani also questioned BCCI’s handling of player safety, citing Mustafizur Rahman’s exclusion from the IPL as an example, and described Bangladesh’s security concerns as legitimate.

He further argued that the ICC should follow FIFA or Olympic models, requiring host nations to guarantee visas and security for all teams or lose hosting rights.

Saiful Haque, general secretary of the Revolutionary Workers Party of Bangladesh and BNP-supported candidate for Dhaka-12, declared his participation in a major struggle against extortion, terrorism, drugs, and corruption. He made the remarks on Wednesday during a street rally in Tejgaon Industrial Area as part of his election campaign. Haque urged voters to unite on February 12 and support the ‘Kodal’ symbol to end criminal activities in the constituency.

Haque said that people had to reclaim their right to vote through sacrifice and bloodshed, and the upcoming election should restore democratic political leadership in national governance.

Haque also criticized certain vested groups for acting in self-interest, asserting that their conspiracies would fail because the people would reject them. He expressed confidence that voters in Dhaka-12 would elect him by a large margin.
