Fayez Ahmed Tayyab confirmed that the government has begun taking steps to shut down all online platforms of the Awami League, including those of its affiliated and allied organizations. The National Cyber Security Agency has issued directives to BTRC to block websites and social media accounts (Facebook, YouTube, TikTok, Telegram, and X). This follows a ban on all political activities of the party until judicial proceedings are completed.

At its fifth convocation ceremony, Chittagong University awarded an honorary Doctor of Letters (D.Litt) degree to Nobel Laureate and Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus. A total of 22,560 graduates participated in the ceremony. Additionally, 22 researchers were awarded PhDs and 17 received MPhil degrees. Keynote addresses were delivered by Education Adviser Prof. Dr. Chowdhury Rafiqul Abrar and UGC Chairman Prof. Dr. S. M. A. Faiz.

Anwaruzzaman Sagar, elder brother of the slain DU student Shahriar Samyo, broke down in tears while speaking before the funeral. “Samyo was 16 years younger than me. He lost our mother in eighth grade, and I’ve protected him since then. I sent him to the highest institution with big dreams. Never imagined I’d lose him like this,” said Sagar, calling on the university authorities to ensure a thorough investigation into his brother’s death.

The first funeral prayer for Shahriar Samyo (25), a Dhaka University student and Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal leader, was held after Zuhr prayers at the university's central mosque. DU Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan, BNP publicity secretary Sultan Salahuddin Tuku, Chhatra Dal president Rakibul Islam Rakib, general secretary Nasir Uddin Nasir, the deceased’s elder brother Anwaruzzaman Sagar, and many teachers, students, and political leaders attended. Samyo’s body is being taken to his village in Sirajganj, where a second prayer will be held before burial in the family cemetery.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump, speaking in Riyadh, expressed strong hope that Saudi Arabia would soon join the Abraham Accords. “It would be a matter of great prestige for Saudi Arabia and crucial for the future of the Middle East,” said Trump. The Abraham Accords have already normalized relations between Israel and the UAE, Bahrain, Sudan, and Morocco. While Saudi Arabia has yet to establish formal diplomatic ties with Israel, discussions have taken place. Trump also warned Iran of renewed “maximum pressure” if it refuses to rejoin a nuclear agreement, pledging to drive Iran’s oil exports down to zero.

SM Farhad, President of DU Chhatra Shibir, expressed deep concern over the murder of Shahriar Samyo, a student of the 2018–19 session, near Suhrawardy Udyan. “Inna Lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un,” he wrote. Farhad termed the murder by outsiders a serious threat to campus security and urged the administration to swiftly investigate and ensure justice by identifying and prosecuting those responsible.

The High Court has granted bail to Zubaida Rahman, who was sentenced to three years in prison for concealing wealth information and acquiring unexplained assets. Earlier on Tuesday, the court also waived a delay of 587 days in filing an appeal against her sentence. The case was originally filed on September 26, 2007, by the Anti-Corruption Commission against Tarique Rahman, Zubaida Rahman, and her mother, Syeda Iqbal Mand Banu, at Kafrul Police Station in Dhaka.

Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam criticized the ruling Awami League, saying, “The issue of holding national elections is entirely an internal matter of Bangladesh. We call on everyone to respect the sovereign will of our people.” He added, “Over 15 years of authoritarian rule, the Awami League has dismantled our democratic framework and compromised national sovereignty.” He called for the banning of the AL’s political activities to ensure national security and protect witnesses and plaintiffs in ICT cases. Shafiqul also said the current government is engaged in a reform process to restore the country’s democratic institutions.

Nasir Uddin Nasir, Central General Secretary of the student wing of the BNP, has announced that the funeral prayer (Janazah) for Shahriar Alam Samyo, a student of the 2018–19 session at the Institute of Education and Research, will be held after Zuhr prayers at Dhaka University Central Mosque. Samyo also served as the Literary and Publication Secretary of the SIR AF Rahman Hall unit. Police from Shahbagh Station have already arrested three individuals in connection with the murder.

The White Panel, a group of Dhaka University teachers, has issued a strong statement condemning the murder of student leader Shahriar Alam Samyo. "He was a fearless fighter for people’s rights—killed in his own campus. What kind of country are we creating?" the statement read. They demanded the immediate arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators. The group alleged that this murder, especially amid growing calls for a national election, could be part of a larger conspiracy to destabilize the country. They urged authorities to identify and bring the killers to justice within 24 hours.

Deputy Spokesperson of the US State Department, Tommy Pigott, said, “We are aware that the ruling government has banned all political activities of the Awami League until legal proceedings against the party and its leaders conclude.” He emphasized that the US does not support any specific political party in Bangladesh. “We advocate for an independent, democratic, fair, and transparent legal process for everyone,” he said. Pigott also urged all governments, including Bangladesh’s, to uphold freedom of expression, peaceful assembly, and the right of association. He reiterated the US’s commitment to deepening its partnership with the people of Bangladesh and working with the interim government.

Supporters of Ishraq Hossain staged a protest and surrounded the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) building, demanding he be sworn in as mayor within 24 hours. What began as a human chain at the main gate grew into a mass rally, with demonstrators occupying the steps of City Hall by 10 AM. On April 27, the Election Commission officially declared Ishraq Hossain as the mayor of Dhaka South through a gazette notification.

NCP leader Sargis Alam has criticized those holding the Dhaka University Vice Chancellor and Proctor responsible for Samyo’s murder, calling it a diversionary tactic. “The murder occurred near the open stage of Suhrawardy Udyan, which is not under the university’s jurisdiction,” he said. He alleged that drug abuse, extortion, and harassment in the park are carried out by syndicates under political protection, not the university administration. Sargis also blamed unregulated vendors and those who collect extortion money from them for creating an unsafe environment and demanded stricter control over outsider entry and vehicle access on campus.

Police have detained three individuals in connection with the murder of Shahriar Samyo (25), a Dhaka University student from the 2018–19 session and a leader of the student wing of the BNP, who was fatally stabbed with a sharp weapon near Suhrawardy Udyan. The names of those arrested have not yet been disclosed. On Wednesday morning, Samyo’s elder brother, Shariful Islam, filed a case at Shahbagh Police Station, naming 10 to 12 unidentified individuals. Police say an investigation is currently underway.

The World Health Organization has reported that at least 57 children have died from starvation and malnutrition in Gaza since March 2, following the blockade on humanitarian aid. With 2.1 million residents, Gaza is now at “severe risk of famine.” WHO representative Richard Peeperkorn warned that without immediate access to nutritious food, clean water, and medical services, nearly 71,000 children under five could suffer from acute malnutrition within the next 11 months. Around 17,000 pregnant and breastfeeding women are also at high risk. Peeperkorn urged for the immediate lifting of the blockade to prevent irreversible damage to an entire generation.
