A rickshaw driver named Nasiruddin Basu, aged 50, was allegedly beaten to death on Tuesday afternoon in Alinagar Bhutpukur area of Chapainawabganj municipality. The incident occurred around 2 p.m. following a dispute over collecting water from a government tube well. Police and family members said Basu had a long-standing conflict with neighbors regarding the use of the tube well. During the altercation, members of the opposing side reportedly struck him on the head with a tree branch, leaving him critically injured. He died on the way to the district hospital.

According to duty doctor Abdur Rahman at the 250-bed district hospital, Basu was dead before arrival, with visible injuries to the back of his head. The body has been sent to the morgue for autopsy. Chapainawabganj Sadar Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Nure Alam said police reached the scene, brought the situation under control, and launched an operation to identify and arrest those involved.

Police investigations are ongoing to locate the suspects and determine the full circumstances of the fatal clash.

Bangladesh Telecommunication Company Limited (BTCL) has officially launched the long-awaited .bd second-level domain, such as example.bd, to strengthen the country's IT and digital economy. The new domain system allows local entrepreneurs, startups, freelancers, and general users to register shorter, more appealing, and nationally representative domain names. Before the launch, BTCL held a three-month 'sunrise period' enabling existing .com.bd users to reserve their corresponding .bd domains, helping prevent name conflicts and cyber-squatting.

Alongside the domain rollout, BTCL introduced a transparent, technology-driven reseller system through which customers can purchase domains directly from approved resellers listed on BTCL’s website. Election Commissioner Md. Anwarul Islam Sarkar stated that the Election Commission believes it has achieved nearly full compliance with the electoral code of conduct ahead of the upcoming 13th National Parliament election. He said that fines totaling 905,500 taka have been imposed for 144 violations of the code. Between January 8 and 26, 94 cases were filed for breaches, covering 128 constituencies out of 300.

The Ministry of Education has released the 'Private Educational Institutions (School, College) MPO-Listed Teacher Transfer Policy 2026' to reduce the suffering of teachers and allow them to work closer to home. The revised policy, signed by Rehana Parvin, Secretary of the Secondary and Higher Education Division, was issued on Tuesday, January 27, 2026. The ministry stated that the entire transfer process will now be conducted through automated software, eliminating the need for teachers to seek influence for transfers. The policy takes effect immediately upon issuance.

According to the new guidelines, teachers can initially apply for transfers within their home district. If no vacancy exists there, they may apply to any district within their division. A significant change under clause 3.8(g) allows teachers to transfer to the district of their spouse, a move described as a major relief for separated families. Teachers must complete at least two years in their current post before applying for a transfer, and another two years after joining a new post before reapplying.

Vacancy lists will be published online by the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education, and applications will only be accepted against those listed positions.

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has filed three separate cases against three Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) officers for allegedly using forged academic certificates to obtain government positions. The accused are Abu Saleh Md. Musa, Sukanta Kundu, and Sanjoy Das. Two of them joined the BCS Administration cadre, while one joined the Foreign Affairs cadre. The announcement was made by ACC Director General Md. Akhter Hossain at a press conference held at the commission’s headquarters in Segunbagicha, Dhaka, on Tuesday afternoon.

According to the ACC, Sukanta Kundu of the 41st BCS Administration cadre submitted a falsified graduation certificate to the Public Service Commission (PSC), which was later verified as fake. Similar allegations were confirmed against Abu Saleh Md. Musa of the 38th BCS Foreign Affairs cadre and Sanjoy Das of the 38th BCS Administration cadre. PSC’s internal investigation verified the authenticity of the allegations and recommended legal action.

The Bangladesh Army has found no evidence of a reported cocktail explosion during the election campaign of BNP candidate Ershad Ullah in Boalkhali, Chattogram. After inspecting the site, collecting evidence, and analyzing CCTV footage, the army concluded that the sound initially described as a blast was actually from a small firecracker or ‘chocolate bomb’. Major Md. Rasel, commander of the Boalkhali army camp, confirmed that no explosive residue or aftershock was detected at the scene.
