Dhaka University (DU) Vice President candidate Abu Sadik Qayem has warned that students will reject candidates “echoing Delhi’s agenda” in the upcoming DU elections. Speaking to the press, he said, “On September 9, a ballot revolution will take place, and our panel will emerge victorious. The aspirations of the students are our aspirations, and we have always worked in a student-friendly manner. Many of our competitors, however, show no concern for students. They are broadcasting Delhi and Bakshali statements.”

Qayem also alleged that his campaign images were being deliberately distorted. “We filed a written complaint with the administration, but even after three days, no action has been taken, despite the availability of photographic and video evidence. If this continues, there are serious concerns about the fairness of the election,” he added.

Interim Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus held a meeting with Jamaat-e-Islami on Sunday to discuss elections and contemporary political issues.
The talks, held at Jamuna after 4:30 PM, were attended by a four-member Jamaat delegation led by Nayeb-e-Ameer Syed Abdullah Md. Taher.
Later in the evening, Yunus is scheduled to meet separately with the National Citizens’ Party (NCP) at 6:30 PM and with the BNP at 7:30 PM.

Justice Md. Akhtaruzzaman, who sentenced former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia to five years in prison in the Zia Orphanage Trust case, has resigned.
The judge had earlier been placed on leave after allegations of misconduct surfaced. Summoned by the Supreme Judicial Council on July 1 to explain himself in person, he submitted his resignation to Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed on Sunday. The resignation has since been forwarded to the President.

The Election Commission has published an updated supplementary voter list, the second revision within a year, bringing the total number of registered voters to 126,307,504.
EC Secretary Akhtar Ahmed said the updated roll includes 64.1 million male voters, 62.2 million female voters, and 1,230 voters from the third gender.
Earlier, a draft list of 4.6 million names was released on August 10. Following review and correction, the final roll has now been announced. Newly eligible 18-year-olds will be added by October 31.

Dhaka University unit of Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (BNP’s student wing) has announced a protest march today, Sunday, at 6 PM, condemning the “shameful attack” on general students of Chittagong University.

The march will begin from TSC (Teacher-Student Centre) and move through various roads on campus, according to a press release issued by the organization’s Office Secretary, Mallik Wasi Uddin Tami.

Army Chief General Waker-uz-Zaman held a meeting with Chief Justice Dr. Syed Refaat Ahmed on Sunday at the Chief Justice’s residence in Gulshan.
The agenda of the discussion was not disclosed. Almost simultaneously, Principal Staff Officer of the Armed Forces Division Lt. Gen. SM Kamrul Hasan met Interim Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus at Jamuna. No details of either meeting were made public.

Rashed Khan, leader of Gono Odhikar Parishad, has accused members of the army and police of carrying out a violent attack on the party’s office, leaving President Nurul Haque Nur and nearly 100 activists injured.
Rejecting the army’s claim that the assault was a “mob attack,” Rashed countered: “If it was a mob, then it was created by army personnel themselves.”
He alleged that soldiers vandalized the office and injured leaders inside. “We completely reject the army’s statement,” he declared.

Authorities have imposed Section 144 in Hathazari municipality and within a 10-kilometer radius of Chittagong University, effective from 3 PM Sunday until 3 PM Monday.
The move follows repeated clashes between students and locals near the university’s second gate, which left several people injured, including the university proctor. The administration said the restrictions aim to prevent further violence.

Asif Mahmud, political advisor and aide to Nurul Haque Nur, has alleged that the Awami League is conspiring to re-enter politics through Jatiya Party.
Speaking at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, Mahmud claimed that the attack on Nur was part of this broader scheme. He labeled both parties as “clearly fascist” for legitimizing an “illegal parliament” in the past.
He warned that if any political force attempts to support such moves, the people, alongside anti-fascist groups, would resist. “Even during Awami League’s tenure, such brazen attacks on political leaders were rare,” he added, demanding accountability from the interim government.

Election Commissioner Abul Fazl Md. Sanaullah has pledged to make upcoming elections inclusive by ensuring accessible voting environments for persons with disabilities and physically challenged voters.
He further announced that expatriates and prison inmates will also be able to vote in the next election. “People had almost forgotten the meaning of elections — we are working to restore that atmosphere,” he said.
EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed added that all necessary assistance will be provided to uphold the voting rights of disabled citizens, noting there are no constitutional barriers to their participation.

Ali Riaz, Vice-Chairman of the National Consensus Commission, has said that political leaders’ pledge to guarantee press freedom would be the greatest reform in Bangladesh’s democracy.
Speaking at the Daily Star office, he urged journalists to continue fighting for their rights and not wait for government intervention. He criticized media owners, saying they exploit journalists knowing there will be little protest.
Riaz further argued that the press had been instrumental in sustaining what he termed a “fascist regime” for the past 16 years, and that accountability must be demanded. “A shopkeeper cannot be the fourth estate,” he remarked, underscoring the need for genuine institutional independence.

Social Welfare Adviser Sharmin S. Murshid visited DMCH on Sunday morning to check on GOP President Nurul Haque Nur, who remains under ICU care.

Earlier in the day, DMCH Director Brigadier General Md Asaduzzaman briefed the press, confirming that Nur’s condition is gradually improving. He reiterated that Nur may be shifted to a general ward soon and could be released within a week if recovery continues as expected.

Chhatra Dal activists at Rajshahi University locked the office of the RAKSU treasurer on Sunday, demanding voting rights for first-year students in the upcoming Rajshahi University Central Students’ Union elections.

They argued that freshmen have paid RAKSU fees upon admission and therefore deserve the right to vote, as is allowed in Jahangirnagar University. Some university teachers have also expressed solidarity with the demand.

Clashes broke out between the protesters and coordinators of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement during the demonstration.

Meanwhile, Sunday marks the final day for submitting nomination papers for the election. The final candidate list will be published on September 11 after scrutiny.

Students of Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) have blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh railway line, pressing a three-point demand that has halted train services in the area since Sunday morning.

The protesters, mainly from the Faculty of Agriculture, demanded the creation of 10th-grade posts for agriculturists in all research institutions, including DAE and BADC, and the abolition of quotas in 9th-grade BADC positions.

They warned of continuing their agitation if their demands are not met.

BNP leader Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has expressed doubts about the possibility of free and fair elections, accusing Awami League loyalists within the administration of plotting to sabotage the process.

Speaking after a meeting with two Election Commissioners, Rizvi said:
“We hope the current commission can deliver free, fair, and participatory elections. But proportional representation (PR) is not possible at this moment.”

He urged the commission to take necessary measures to ensure fairness and called for a proper investigation into the recent attack on Nurul Haque Nur.
