Tension erupted in Fatehabad Union of Debidwar upazila, Cumilla, after allegations surfaced that the union’s administrative officer (secretary) Abu Hanif held a secret meeting with murder accused and Union Parishad chairman Kamruzzaman Masud. The incident occurred on Monday morning at the Fatehabad Union Parishad office, where an angry crowd reportedly assaulted the secretary following the news of the meeting.

According to local sources, Kamruzzaman Masud, also the general secretary of the local Awami League, is accused in five cases, including three murder and assault cases linked to the 2024 anti-discrimination movement in Debidwar. After a change in government, he went into hiding, was later arrested, and spent about eight months in jail before being released on bail. Locals claimed he recently sought to resume his duties with administrative approval, sparking public outrage.

Police confirmed receiving a complaint regarding the assault. The Debidwar police officer-in-charge stated that the matter is under investigation and legal action will follow discussions with senior officials.

Nargis Khatun, an assistant teacher at Jotbazar Adarsha Girls’ High School in Manda, Naogaon, claims she has not received any salary for nearly 11 years since joining on August 1, 2015. She alleges that she was appointed despite the position not being vacant and that she paid Tk 1 million to the head teacher, Abdur Rahman Dewan, in exchange for the job. Her position has not been included in the MPO list, leaving her in severe financial and mental distress.

According to Nargis, she applied for the post following a recruitment notice, passed both written and oral tests, and received an appointment letter on July 27, 2015. Later, she discovered that another indexed teacher was already employed in the same position, meaning the post was not vacant. Her father, Khorhshed Alam Shilal, also accused the head teacher of fraud and demanded a fair investigation.

When contacted, the head teacher declined to comment over the phone. Upazila Secondary Education Officer Sufiul Alam stated that appointing a teacher to a post already held by an indexed teacher is against regulations and promised an investigation if a formal complaint is filed.

Sixteen government primary schools in the haor region of Sunamganj’s Madhyanagar upazila have received boats to make student travel safer and easier during the monsoon. The boats were distributed under the 2025–26 fiscal year’s rural infrastructure maintenance (TR) program, funded with an allocation of 260,000 taka. He expressed hope that the new boats would improve attendance and ensure safer travel. Police in Barishal recovered the partially decomposed hanging body of a Barishal University student named Utshash Karmakar on Tuesday night, July 21, 2026. The body was found in a ground-floor mess room of a three-storey building near the university’s Khalpar brick kiln area. Officers said the room was locked from inside, and locals alerted police after detecting a strong odor. The body was recovered around 11:30 p.m.

Utshash Karmakar was a student of the Department of Geology and Mining from the 2018–19 academic session and hailed from Khulna district. The university’s proctorial team, along with faculty members and students, visited the scene after being informed. Assistant Proctor Dr. Gazi Md. Sakhawat Hossain confirmed the incident and said the body was being sent for autopsy.

According to Sub-Inspector Saiful Islam of Barishal Bandar Police Station, the condition of the body suggested death occurred two to three days earlier. The body was sent to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital morgue for post-mortem examination. Police suspect suicide but said the cause of death will be confirmed after investigation and autopsy reports.

Hasan Mahmud Shuvo, a student of Dhaka International Medical College and resident of Hazariganj Union in Charfassion, Bhola, continues to suffer from leg pain caused by police torture during the 2024 July uprising. He was arrested and beaten by police near Dhaka College on July 27, 2024, leaving him with a lasting knee injury.

Shuvo was an active participant in the 2024 mass movement, joining rallies, writing in media and social platforms, and advocating against injustice. He described witnessing deadly violence on July 19 in Uttara’s BNS Center area, where several protesters were shot. He said he believed silence in the face of oppression was unacceptable and viewed writing as a form of resistance to awaken public conscience and preserve history.

Reflecting on his experience, Shuvo urged the younger generation to remember the sacrifices made for freedom, justice, and democracy, emphasizing that such values never come without struggle.
