Farmers in Nesarabad upazila of Pirojpur have regained relief as diesel supply returned to normal, allowing irrigation to resume and revitalizing paddy fields. Earlier, irrigation in the upazila’s Irri-Boro fields was disrupted on March 30 and April 22 due to a diesel shortage, causing several hectares of paddy to wilt and raising fears of poor yield.

Dr. Kamda Prasad Saha, former head of the forensic department at Comilla Medical College, has publicly defended his role in the second autopsy of Sohagi Jahan Tanu, a student of Comilla Victoria Government College whose murder case resurfaced after a suspect was arrested ten years later. Facing intense criticism and threats on social media, Dr. Saha posted a detailed explanation on Facebook on Monday evening, clarifying his involvement and the technical limitations of the second autopsy.
He stated that the first autopsy was conducted by another doctor, and he only led the second examination under court order as part of a three-member expert board. The body was decomposed when exhumed 10–15 days after burial, preventing a clear determination of the cause of death. However, DNA tests found sperm from three men, which was noted in the report. Dr. Saha emphasized that the report never suggested consensual sexual activity and that the findings were scientifically valid.
He expressed concern over personal attacks and misinformation online, asserting that all his actions were legally documented and that he supports a fair investigation to identify and punish the real perpetrators.

Democrats in the United States Senate have initiated a sixth vote on the War Powers Resolution aimed at restricting President Donald Trump’s military actions in Iran. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer announced that the vote would take place this week, emphasizing the need to reassert congressional authority over war decisions.
Schumer questioned whether Republicans would continue to support Trump after what he described as a reckless and unpopular 60-day conflict. Under the US Constitution, the power to declare war lies with Congress, not the president. Democrats have accused the Trump administration of conducting military operations in Iran without congressional approval.
Previous attempts by Democrats to pass similar resolutions in both the Senate and the House of Representatives have failed. Despite these setbacks, they are pressing ahead with another vote to increase pressure on the administration and reaffirm legislative oversight of military engagements.

The forecast also indicated partly cloudy to cloudy skies over Dhaka and surrounding areas, with chances of rain and thunderstorms.
The department predicted rain with gusty or squally winds and lightning across several divisions, including Dhaka, Mymensingh, Sylhet, Rangpur, Rajshahi, and Chattogram. Syria has launched its first judicial proceedings against ousted president Bashar al-Assad and senior members of his former government. The public hearing began at 11 a.m. on Sunday in Damascus, marking the start of trials under the interim government. Only one defendant, Atef Najib, Assad’s cousin and a former brigadier general, appeared in court. Najib, who once headed the political security branch in Daraa province, was brought in handcuffed and placed in a cage inside the courtroom.
Najib is accused of leading crackdowns and arrests in Daraa in 2011, when teenagers were detained and tortured for anti-government graffiti, sparking nationwide protests that escalated into a 13-year civil war. The conflict ended with Assad’s downfall on December 8, 2024, leaving over half a million dead and displacing hundreds of thousands. Assad fled to Russia after his ouster, along with many close allies.
The court set May 10 for the next hearing. Other defendants to be tried in person include Assad’s relative Wasim al-Assad, former Grand Mufti Ahmed Badruddin Hassoun, and several military and security officials arrested in recent months.

Two political activists were shot dead in Raozan upazila of Chattogram within two days, marking the latest in a series of violent incidents. Since the February 12 election, four murders have occurred in two months, and over the past 21 months since August 2024, a total of 23 killings have been recorded in the area, 19 of which are reported to be politically motivated. Most victims were affiliated with the BNP and its associated organizations.
Local residents describe Raozan as a hotspot of armed violence, where illegal weapons are widespread and rival gangs compete for dominance. Police Superintendent Nazir Ahmed Khan stated that most killings stem from disputes over control of sand and soil businesses in Raozan and Rangunia. He said suspects have been arrested in each case, including three linked to the latest murder, and pledged intensified operations to curb terrorism.
Analysts and human rights activists have criticized law enforcement for failing to restore order, arguing that the prolonged violence reflects administrative weakness and possible political interference.

In Syedpur of Nilphamari, unpaid electricity bills in 24 Bihari camps have reached Tk 66 crore as of February 2026, creating a prolonged dispute over who should bear the cost. Despite repeated letters from the local electricity office to the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief, no resolution has been reached. The ministry has stated it will only pay bills up to 2016, arguing that camp residents are now Bangladeshi citizens and must pay their own bills.
Field visits revealed that while each camp has a government-installed meter, many residents also use direct connections from nearby poles without meters. The camps consume about Tk 50 lakh worth of electricity monthly. Officials warn that continuous power use is maintained to prevent fire hazards from illegal connections.
Local leaders and rights activists attribute the crisis to poor planning and lack of formal integration of the camps into the city structure. They say the government is losing revenue while residents face safety risks. Camp representatives have called for dignified rehabilitation to resolve the issue permanently.
