Fisheries, Livestock and Agriculture Minister Mohammad Aminur Rashid announced that the government will allocate more funds for livestock research in the coming years. Speaking as the chief guest at the closing workshop of the Bangladesh Livestock Research Institute’s (BLRI) ‘Buffalo Research and Development (First Revised)’ project on Tuesday, he emphasized that no nation can progress without research and that the government will not hesitate to invest in it. The minister highlighted the importance of popularizing buffalo farming, noting that buffalo milk is a valuable resource in developed countries. He suggested expanding salt-tolerant grass cultivation in coastal areas to promote buffalo farming and called for further research on profitable farming in limited spaces. Earlier in the day, he visited BLRI’s goat research farm and underscored the cultural and economic significance of the Black Bengal goat, encouraging investment in goat farming to create employment opportunities.

The event was chaired by BLRI Director General Dr. Shakila Faruq and attended by senior officials from the ministry, universities, and related institutions.

Switzerland has expressed interest in participating in ground handling operations at the third terminal of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka. The interest was conveyed by Swiss Ambassador to Bangladesh Reto Renggli during a courtesy meeting with Civil Aviation and Tourism Adviser Afroza Khanam (Rita) and State Minister M Rashiduzzaman Millat at the Secretariat on Tuesday morning, according to the ministry’s public relations department.

During the meeting, both sides emphasized strengthening and expanding the existing bilateral relations between Bangladesh and Switzerland in a dynamic and multifaceted manner. The Swiss side also expressed willingness to work jointly in Bangladesh’s aviation sector and highlighted the interest of Swiss company Swissport in taking part in the airport’s ground handling operations.

In response, the adviser and state minister invited Swissport to submit a formal proposal and assured that the matter would be considered positively. Previously, the United Kingdom and Turkey had also shown interest in participating in the third terminal’s ground handling activities.

Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani stated that an understanding between Washington and Tehran is crucial for ensuring regional stability and security. Speaking alongside the US President during a joint briefing on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Evian-les-Bains, France, he emphasized that Qatar is always ready to assist its friends and partners when cooperation is needed. He also reaffirmed that dialogue and diplomacy remain the only viable paths to resolving the ongoing crisis.

Qatar’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majed Al-Ansari said the country is working to prevent renewed tensions in the Middle East and to restore the stability that existed before the recent escalation involving Iran. United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres will visit Haiti on Tuesday to express solidarity with the people suffering from ongoing gang violence. According to his office, this will be his first visit to the Caribbean nation since July 2023. During the trip, Guterres will meet men, women, and children affected by the violence and assess the country’s humanitarian and security conditions. A mobile court in Barishal’s Gournadi upazila sentenced a 26-year-old man named Bikash Chandra Bala to one year of imprisonment without labor for torturing his parents when they delayed giving him money for drugs. The incident occurred on Tuesday morning, June 16, in Harisena village under Gournadi municipality. The sentence was handed down by Executive Magistrate Md. Mehedi Hasan.

According to Faizul Islam Hridoy Hawlader, Sub-Inspector of the Department of Narcotics Control, Gournadi Circle, Bikash had long been addicted to drugs and frequently assaulted his parents and damaged their home when denied money. His parents had previously sold land to send him abroad, but he returned and resumed drug use under the influence of peers. He had also spent six months in a rehabilitation center before relapsing.

Authorities arrested Bikash with 100 grams of cannabis during a raid in Harisena village, conducted with the assistance of local union chairman Soikat Guha Pikul. The mobile court also fined him 5,000 taka in addition to the prison sentence.

Bangladesh’s Minister for Road Transport, Bridges, Shipping, and Railways, Sheikh Robiul Alam, announced that ten additional districts will soon be brought under the country’s rail network. Speaking at a press conference at the Press Information Department in Dhaka on Tuesday, the minister said the expansion will cover districts near Dhaka and in the southern region. Currently, 49 districts have rail links, and the government aims to connect all 64. The minister added that future projects will integrate rail lines, locomotives, and carriages under unified plans to ensure immediate operational readiness upon completion.

Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced in parliament that Bangladesh will begin holding local government elections across the country after the monsoon season, likely from September or October 2026. The first phase will include Union Parishad elections, followed by polls for municipalities, upazilas, district councils, and city corporations within the next year.

The minister stated that the elections will be conducted in phases depending on budget availability. He added that elections for all 13 city corporations, including the newly formed Bogura City Corporation, are planned within the same timeframe. A seven-year-old girl named Nandini Rani was found dead in a maize field in Lalmonirhat’s Aditmari upazila, a day after she went missing. He clarified that the opposition would consider participating only if a committee for reform, rather than amendment, is formed. He also stressed that the opposition will act responsibly in Parliament, avoiding personal attacks or praise, and will walk out only if their logical proposals are dismissed.

A man named Rupan Mia, aged 45, died after being electrocuted while using an electric fan to dry rice at his home in Surjonagar Purbo Para village under Bakshiganj Sadar Union of Jamalpur district. The incident occurred on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, around noon. Rupan Mia was the son of Hazarat Ali from the same village.

According to local sources, Rupan Mia was preparing to use an electric fan to remove husks from rice when he accidentally touched a faulty wire and was severely injured by electric shock. He was taken to the Upazila Health Complex, where the attending doctor declared him dead.

Bakshiganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mokbul Hossain confirmed the death and stated that legal procedures related to the incident are ongoing.

U.S. President Donald Trump has sharply criticized Israel’s ongoing military operations in Lebanon, saying that too many people are being killed.
